HOISINGTON - Eleven Hoisington High School forensics team members have qualified 17 entries for state forensics in Wichita on May 5.
Hoisington Middle School 7th and 8th graders participated in the league math relays April 23 at Sacred Heart Middle School in Dodge City. There were four categories related to the Kansas Math standards. The 8th grade group consisting of Kylie Broeder, Ryan Broeder, Sienna Ludwig, Rylie Koster, Zade Sanders, and Jacob Warnken placed second in the overall competition. In the 7th grade event, Dewey Doze took third in the Algebra Portion and Vikki Donetz received a 2nd place finish in the Data Analysis. Bob and Nancy Beck will celebrate their 50th anniversary with an Open House from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 5 at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center in Claflin. Their grandchildren are Brad Johnson of Claflin, Jeremy Johnson, Laura and Treighton of Hays and Brandon Beck of Lawrence.
Dr. Robert J. Weaver celebrated his 90th birthday with a family and friends dinner hosted by Derinda Bussman, Teresa Bachand and Mary Sue Schneider.

The Barton Community College Foundation will kick off its Annual Academic Enrichment Fund Campaign, "Changing Lives – One Gift at a Time," on Sunday, March 1. Lifelong area residents and supporters of the college Gary and Anna Burke will serve as honorary co-chairs for the month-long fundraising drive.

With spring approaching, Great Bend will participate in the statewide tornado drill on Tuesday. That will also be the date for the annual presentations of "Storm Fury on the Plains," a weather and storm safety program.
The Rosewood Miracle Workers Aktion Club toured the Shafer Art Gallery at Barton Community College on Feb. 13. Shafter Gallery Director Dave Barnes helped members identify pieces of artwork that they had been instructed to find at the gallery.
At the February Great Bend Garden Club meeting, member Alice Young introduced Rebecca Ford who gave a fascinating introduction to the art of soap making. Her inspiration and mentor was a sister at a convent in Wichita whose homemade soaps provided funds for a church mission project.

Barton Natural Gas student James Mayes, 29, is knee-deep in his coursework to become a member of the natural gas industry, but he has always had the desire to be on stage. He found a way to do both and is a cast-member for the upcoming Barton Community College Theatre Spring Musical "Godspell," which opens Thursday at the college's Fine Arts Auditorium. The musical is at 7:30 p.m. March 5, 6, 7 and at 2 p.m. March 8.
STAFFORD COUNTY - A Pratt woman was injured Friday when she lost control of the vehicle she was driving, 6 miles south and 2.5 miles west of Stafford.
DOWNS - Louis Joseph Brummer died Feb. 27, 2015. He was born March 18, 1924, south of Downs to Ignatz and Anna Redeker Brummer. He attended High Prairie School, south of Downs. On Aug. 8, 1950, he married Cleo Marie Boberg. He worked as an elevator manager and grain inspector with Midway Coop in Corinth and Downs.
ELLINWOOD - Betty R. Standlee, 88 died Feb. 28, 2015, at Leisure Homestead, St. John. Services are pending with Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend.
PAWNEE ROCK - Jason Wayne Green, 33, died Feb. 26, 2015, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Nov. 1, 1981, at Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Buck and Sally Green. He married Brandie Bunch March 23, 2013, at Larned. A Pawnee Rock resident, he was a kitchen manager for Gambino's Pizza.
