RUSSELL - Clarence B. Wagner, 87, of Russell, died Dec. 16 at the Salina Regional Health Center.
ELLINWOOD -Twenty-one-year-old Joshua Kevin Roan of Ellinwood was injured while driving his 1987 Honda 4-wheeler south on SE 105 Ave on Sunday morning at 9:40 a.m.

The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 9 at the Club at Stone Ridge. President Rose Kelly called the meeting to order. A total of 49 members were present. Rose led the flag salute and Becky Dudrey gave the invocation. The minutes of the Sept. 2 meeting were approved as printed and the treasurer's report was approved as read.
2003 GBHS graduate Nathan Koch recently completed all requirements to earn a DMA degree in musical performance from the University of Texas in Austin.
Bernita Schloemer Clair will celebrate her 80th birthday on Dec. 27 with a card shower. Bernita was born in 1931 in Rush County. In 1949, she graduated from LaCrosse High School. She was married to Millard "Mitty" Schloemer from 1954 until his passing in 1982. She married Jack Clair in 1990 in Ellinwood, where the couple still resides.
The Parnassus Club met on Dec. 13. Parnassus Auditions have been set for March 3rd, 2012. The room is approved for the auditions. Glenna and committee are searching for judges at this time.
Gina Colleen Penka and Kirk Alan Calhoon were united in marriage on June 11 at the First United Methodist Church in Great Bend in a double ring ceremony officiated by Tom Sheldon. Parents of the bride are Kenneth and Rhonda Penka of Great Bend. Parents of the groom are Brian and Terri Calhoon and Mike and Shelly Wilkison, all of Beloit. Grandparents of the bride are Darrell and Colleen Rexwinkle and Evelyn Penka, all of Great Bend, and the late Edward Penka. Grandparents of the groom are Don and Sherry Calhoon, of Phillipsburg and Don and Sharon Stroede, of Beloit.

CLAFLIN -Patricia Mae "Patty" Smith, 73, died Oct. 25 at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan. She was born March 24, 1941 in Emporia,the daughter of Wm. C. and Velma (Brown) Phillips. Patty graduated from Claflin High School in 1959 and then attended Fort Hays State College Nursing School. She later graduated from the Academy of Beauty in Great Bend and then taught classes there. He was standing in ditch water on the west side of Highway 281 about a mile south of Hoisington - all alone and seemingly uninterested in his immediate surroundings. I pulled off the roadway about 40 yards away, and just watched for about 30 minutes. Traffic was light, and I recognized a few of the people who probably questioned my thinking in view of my parking spot. The camera must have been reassuring - nobody stopped.

HOISINGTON -"Stepping On – Building Confidence and Reducing Falls for the Elderly" will be offered by Clara Barton Hospital. The fall prevention program will begin in Hoisington on Tuesday, November 11, 2014. The program is from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesdays for seven weeks. The course will be held in the Hoisington Activity Center classroom located at 1200 Susank Road.

Benny M. Williams, 57, of Great Bend , passed away on Oct. 22, at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Born on Jan. 12, 1957, in Vallejo, Calif., he was the son of Benny O. and Jacqueline D. (Mayfield) Williams. After graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he spent the next two years. Following his discharge from the Navy, he worked in Navy shipyards in Los Angeles, Calif. and San Diego, Calif. He later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was united in marriage to Diane L. The Touched By Cancer (TBC) support group meeting for Nov. 21 has been canceled due to conflicts. The next meeting for the group will be at 2 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the Heartland Cancer Center.
Sisters of Hope, a new support group for recently widowed women, is planning an informational "meet and greet." It will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 in the Fireside Room at First Assembly of God Church, 601 S. Patton Road in Great Bend.

Each fall, the Barton County Extension Council holds an election to fill positions on our various program development committees. Mark Wednesday, Oct. 29 on your calendar and stop by the Barton County Extension Office at 1800 12th St. to cast your ballot. Election time is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Any Barton County resident who is at least 18 years of age may vote in this election.
The Barton Debate and Forensics team participated in its second tournament of the year Oct. 17-19 at the University of Central Missouri and Barton's Chase Pumford was a standout performer.
RUSSELL - Artists at Barton Community College got a chance to showcase their talents at the annual Russell Original Art Review (ROAR) exhibition at the Russell 4-H Building. The show ran from Oct. 10 through 12. The show had 262 entries from 91 artists from 33 cities.
