KNG battalion being welcomed home from Africa

The first of three groups of soldiers from the Kansas National Guard's 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, which has a subordinate unit in Great Bend, will be welcomed home from their year-long deployment to the Horn of Africa on Thursday Topeka.

House fire causes major damage

Great Bend firefighters were dispatched to 812 Stone St. at 10:15 p.m. Friday. The first crew on the scene reported heavy fire and smoke from a window, Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said. "The bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down; however, the house had a large amount of belongings throughout the structure making it difficult to totally extinguish the fire." No one was hurt, but several dogs in the house died. Damage was estimated at $50,000 and at last report the cause of the fire had not been determined.

Melvin J. "Mel" Schreiber 1931 - 2015

HAYS - Melvin J. "Mel" Schreiber, 83, died Jan. 25, 2015, at Hays Medical Center. Born Dec. 19, 1931, in Great Bend, he was the son of Fred and Margaret (Mauler) Schreiber. On Sept. 27, 1952, he married Frances L. "Frankie" (Musick) in Hutchinson. She died April 3, 2012. He was director of fleet maintenance for Becker Corporation in El Dorado for 21 years. He also worked 11 years at Thompson Transport in McPherson. In 2008 he moved to Hays from Andover.

Gas prices creep back up a tick

Average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 3.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.82 Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,329 gas outlets in Kansas. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.3 cents in the last week to $2.02.

Golden Belt Community Foundation accepting grant applications for March 1

The Golden Belt Community Foundation invites proposals for its upcoming competitive grant cycle. Applications now are being accepted from qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and public institutions, including schools, government entities, and clubs and civic/community organizations in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties. HHS sends wrestlers to finals at Bob Kuhn Classic

The Hoisington High School varsity wrestling team participated in the Bob Kuhn Sr. Prairie Classic Wrestling Tournament this past weekend at Hays. The team sent five wrestlers to the finals where senior Brandon Ball at 138 lbs. won the Championship match to help propel him to win the Tournaments Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. Sophomore Jonathan Ball, 145 lbs.lbs.; freshman Christopher Ball, 152 lbs.; senior Chance Boor, 195 lbs.; and sophomore Landen Urban, 285 lbs., all finished second.
