A Chevrolet Malibu driven by Anthony Wilson, 18, Leoti, collided with a Dodge Ram driven by Ryan D. Friedly, 19, of Hoisington, at 3:40 p.m. Monday in Logan County, at the U.S. 83/U.S. 40 junction in Oakley. Kansas Highway Patrol reports Wilson was westbound and Friedly was eastbound on U.S. 40, and Wilson failed to yield and attempted to turn left and was hit by the pickup. Great Bend Community Coordinator, Christina Hayes, her intern Madison Debes and Dainty Darlings Boutique owner Renee Skinner have collaborated to coordinate a fashion show at 6 p.m. Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Clayton Moses Memorial Band Shell in the Barton County Courthouse Square.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free program, "What Do You Really Know About the Courthouse Square?" at 1 p.m. Friday, July 13, at the Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Joe Boley will present historical facts and notes about the band shell, monuments and other significant features of the Barton County Courthouse.

Leonard E. Miller Jr., 61, died July 8 at his home in Great Bend. Born Dec. 12, 1950 in Great Bend, he was the son of Leonard Jean and Edna (Kathman) Miller. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a siding installer for Southard Corporation, worked at EQ Muffler and was a handyman for Joe Mayers.
WICHITA - John O. Dick, 71, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away on July 8. John spent his working career in the oil and gas industry, along with Boeing where he retired as a facilities engineer. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and lover of the outdoors.
KANOPOLIS - Terry Raymond Kowalsky, 69, died July 7 at his home in Kanopolis. Born Nov. 15, 1942 in Great Bend, he was the son of Leo Joseph and Hilda Margaret (Heinz) Kowalsky. He was a resident of Kanopolis since 2009, coming from Redding, Calif. where he had been a longtime resident. He operated a machine shop in Redding, Calif. and also farmed and raised cattle. He was involved in area dirt track racing in the 1960s and 1970s.
DODGE CITY – Clarence E. McConnaughy, 69, died July 9 at Trinity Manor Nursing Home in Dodge City. Born Oct. 8, 1942 in Great Bend, he was the son of Clarence E. McConnaughy Jr. and Martha (Kutnick) McConnaughy. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State University. On Oct. 14, 1961, he married Marsha Hoge in Great Bend. A resident of Dodge City since 1966 moving from Great Bend, he worked for Skaggs, George-Nielson Motors and Dodge City International.
LA CROSSE - Terra Maryha Helm, 37, died on July 8 at her home. Born March 28, 1975 in Bath, Maine, she was the daughter of Mark A. and Katherine M. (Steadman) Helm Fisher. She moved from her birthplace of Bath, Maine, at an early age. A former resident of Great Bend, Hays and Wichita, she was a resident of La Crosse since her high school graduation from La Crosse High School in 1993.
The Great Bend Rec center will be extending the dates for this year's Hap Dumont 11U State Tournament. "We are extending the dates to begin this Friday due to the number of teams that have registered," said Christina Hayes, community development coordinator for the City of Great Bend. The GBHS varsity volleyball team won first place in the Barton Summer League tournament defeating Central Plains in the championship. The team will head to the University of Colorado Team Camp at Boulder July 16-18th. The Great Bend JV finished in second place in their tournament.
