BURDETT - Fern I. Rodebaugh, 91, died Nov. 28 in Derby. Arrangements are pending with Morell Funeral Home in Larned.
William D. Witcraft, 87, of Great Bend, died Nov. 26 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born April 21, 1924, in Fairfax, Okla., he was the son of Chauncey and Mattie Smith Witcraft. He married Marian McAfee. They later divorced. He then married Betty Schiewe. She died in July of 2009. A long-time resident of Barton County, he was a retired oilfield perforator. He enjoyed playing golf.
All classes at Barton Community College have been canceled due to a power outage, Monday.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, it's appropriate to consider all we have to be thankful for, even during these difficult times. All of us need to remember and thank our ancestors for having the courage to immigrant to this country and later spread out and settle from coast to coast since we are a nation of immigrants. USD 428 Board of Education will meet at noon on Thursday at Great Bend High School, 2027 Morton. Items on the agenda include, policy development relating to fundraising practices in the district and presentation of any offers received on the Shady Grove property. Great Bend High School Principal Tim Friess and other staff members will share information regarding the academic programs and the school improvement efforts at Great Bend High School.
Disabled American Veterans Chapter 27, Great Bend will be holding their annaul Christmas Dinner, instead of their monthly meeting, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 2 at the Great Bend American Legion Post 180, 1011 Kansas Ave., northeast conferance room.

Chris and Vanessa Calcara announce the birth of the son, Nash Russell Calcara on Oct. 23, in Lenexa. He weighed 7 lbs. 2 oz and was 20 in. long. He has a 2 year old big sister, Arden Quinn Calcara.

An article from a child development expert at Kansas State University caught my eye this week with some great advice on Christmas gift giving. I wholeheartedly agree with Bronwyn Fees when she says, "the best gift parents can give their children for Christmas may be helping them understand less can be more. Be careful not to confuse more things with more love."
Carol Warrick will celebrate his 100th birthday with a Come and Go reception from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Glory Be, 7th and Broadway in Larned. Carol was born on Dec. 25th.
North Central Kansas Technical College (NCK Tech), with campuses in Beloit and Hays, announcse new students who have been accepted into career technical education programs for the 2015-2016 academic year. While applications are accepted until the Fall 2015 semester begins, early admission ensures the student is enrolled in their program of choice. Students are eligible for early admission by submitting their ACT or Compass Test scores and visiting either campus. Those with qualifying test scores submitted by Dec. 1, are immediately accepted into their selected program until the program capacity is met.
The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met on Dec. 12, at Montana Mike's. President Sally O'Connor presided over the meeting. There were 46 members present, along with Superintendent of USD 428, Brad Reed.
