BCC to host Senior Day; $1,000 in scholarships up for grabs

A prize drawing for two $500 Barton Foundation scholarships, as well as other prizes, will be just one part of a day full of festivities available for area high school seniors as part of the Barton Community College Admissions Department's Senior Day, with registration starting at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 in the Kirkman Visitor Center on the Barton campus.

Gary Dean Southard 1935 - 2012

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Gary Dean Southard, born George Gary Dean Southard on Jan. 16, 1935, passed away on Jan. 24 at Broward General Medical Center with family at his bedside, from complications of heart disease. A resident of Coral Springs, Fla., since 1978, he was born in Hutchinson and raised in Great Bend. Before coming to Great Bend, his family followed their father in the oil fields in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Gary graduated from Great Bend High School.

Baby-sitting course offered

The Great Bend Recreation Commission has a few openings left for its American Red Cross Baby-sitters Training later this month, GBRC Program Coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick said. The training is open to youths 11-15 years old and will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, at the Great Bend Recreation Center located at 1214 Stone St.

​Billy Joe Leatherman 1939 - 2015

Billy Joe Leatherman, 75, died March 26, 2015, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Aug. 11, 1939, in Stafford, he was the son of Merle M. and Marie (Koelsch) Leatherman. On Jan. 10, 1960, he married Iona Lebsack in Otis. A resident of Great Bend since 1960, coming from St. John, he was an oilfield chemical salesman.

'Life is Beautiful' showing Friday

The 1997 motion picture, "Life is Beautiful," will be shown at 6:15 p.m. Friday, March 27, as part of the Heartland Center for Spirituality's latest series of "Movies with a Message." Fish fry is Friday

HOISINGTON - Everyone is invited to an "All You Can Eat" fish fry from 5:30-7:30 p.m. tonight at the Hoisington Knights of Columbus Hall. Members will be serving Alaskan pollock, coleslaw, scalloped potatoes and drinks. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 4-11 and children under 4 eat for free. All proceeds support area charities.

Illusionist Reza to perform Friday

Reza the Illusionist will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Crest Theater. The program is a benefit for Star of Hope and for Great Bend Community Theatre. Tickets are $17 for adults, $11 for students; children under 5 will be admitted free.

Lenten Luncheon: Central Baptist

The final Lenten luncheon in the local series will be at noon on Wednesday, April 1 at Central Baptist Church, 3301 Lakin Ave. The host pastor is Dr. Joan Harrington, and the speaker will be Adam Wutka, pastor at St. Mark Lutheran Church. A meal is served at noon (not earlier) and the meeting ends at 1 p.m. A freewill offering is suggested to defray the expenses of the host congregation.
