Wheels stolen from Jeep

Sometime between midnight and 7 a.m. on Feb. 18, the wheels and tires were stolen off a 1980 Jeep CJ 7 Renegade parked at 2107 Madison St. in Great Bend. A yellow, 6-foot recovery strap was also stolen. Loss was $1,620.

Social Networking program offered

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free Stop 'N Learn Session titled, "Social Networking: Making the Connections," from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Social networking websites have increased in popularity over the last several years. For many members of the younger generation, social networks are the main way they communicate with others, sponsors said. Presbyterian Women to hold rummage sale

Presbyterian Women of Great Bend will hold their annual Rummage Sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in the church Fellowship Hall at 24th and Washington. Funds raised by the rummage sale are contributed by Presbyterian Women to local charities and service organizations as well as to national and world-wide missions. A wide variety of minimally priced useful items in good condition will be for sale, spokesman Carol Woodmansee said.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Muriel S. Machal, 91, died April 25, at Cheyenne Mountain Care Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Born Jan. 13, 1924, in Kinsley, she was the daughter of Ray and Ida (Robbins) Stewart. On April 3, 1957, she married Joseph Anthony Machal in Great Bend, He died on Dec. 21, 1992. A resident of Colorado Springs, Colo. for seven years, coming from Great Bend, she was an insurance and financial planner for L.C. Harmon Agency.

Young Professionals can learn about K-12 options

Members of the Barton County Young Professionals group are invited to attend the luncheon program, "School Enrollment Options," on Tuesday, May 5, at Pizza Hut, 4101 10th St. There will be a panel of local K-12 education providers, from both public and private schools. The program is free to attend, but participants must pay for their meals. The presentation will run from 12:15 -12:45 p.m., with door prize drawings.

Learn how to conserve water with a rain barrel

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host "Water Conservation Rain Barrel" from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. This is a free Stop 'N' Learn session. Landscapes, on average, account for nearly 40 percent of a household's water usage during the summer months. Rain barrels can help alleviate some of the pressure on water resources by collecting rain water to be used for watering purposes.

KCAC tournament kicks off with Community Night

Great Bend will be hosting the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) softball and baseball tournament for the second year from April 29 through May 3, 2015. ​Drivers flee in Great Bend incidents

A vehicle driven by Elias Garza was southbound in the 2000 block of Harrison St. at 9:05 p.m. Sunday and rear-ended a vehicle driven by Kenneth Gray, who reportedly had slammed on his brakes. Both vehicles fled the scene, according to the Great Bend Police Department.

Error costly as Volquez, Royals fall to White Sox

CHICAGO- The White Sox completed an unofficial sweep of the Royals on Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field with a 5-3 victory in the regularly scheduled contest. The White Sox also won the suspended game from Friday by a 3-2 margin, when Avisail Garcia delivered a walk-off single against Kelvin Herrera to score Melky Cabrera. The teams only needed to play the ninth to complete that game.
