Rural residents eligible for Books by Mail

Central Kansas residents in rural areas can receive library books in the mail at no charge, according to Abigail Cuffey at Central Kansas Library Service, Great Bend.

Young Professionals network at mixer

The Barton County Young Professionals group got a makeover last Friday, when over 100 men and women attended a mixer at Straub International. Although the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development has sponsored a Young Professionals group for some time, sponsors said the mixer was the kickoff for a revitalized group for working people between the age of 21-40.

Man found burning wire

Great Bend Fire Department dispatched units at 10:39 a.m. Friday for a possible structure fire at 600 Kansas Ave. Chief Mike Napolitano said that upon arrival they found that a man was in the basement burning the insulation off copper wire. The fire was out when units arrived; however, there was still some smoke in the building.

Hazel "Alberta" Crone - 1925 - 2015

PAWNEE ROCK - Hazel "Alberta" Crone, 89, died Jan. 24, at her home in rural Pawnee Rock. Born July 12, 1925, in Anderson County, she was the daughter of George Albert and Hazel Olive (Colgin) Payne. On June 26, 1942, she married Francis "Roy" Crone in Iola. He died on Nov. 19, 2007. A resident of Barton County most of her life, she was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Trees vs Grass

If you have been to the library in the past few days, you will have noticed a big change! Many of the tables and chairs have been removed to make way for the "Hometown Teams" Smithsonian Exhibit. Crates should be arriving before Friday filling up the empty space. Library services will remain as usual, and we have tables set aside for you to continue to use.
