Sprick 50th

Rev. Lloyd and Judy Sprick will celebrate their 50th anniversary from 2 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 18 with an open house at St. Peter Lutheran church Parish Hall in Holyrood. The event will be hosted by their children, Matthew and Jill Sprick of Hiawatha, Stephen and Joanna Sprick of Osborne, Jenelle Sprick of Overland Park and Sara and Scott McMahan of Blue Springs, Mo. The couple has 10 grandchildren.

USD 428, Holy Family, Central Kansas Christian Academy and HeadStart Schools

The following meals will be served Dec. 12 through Dec. 16. The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.

League of Women Voters meeting

League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday at The Club at Stone Ridge. Lunch will be from the menu. The program will be provided by State Senator Ruth Teichmann. She will be discussing the redistricting project, and the important issues facing the legislature for the new term. The luncheon is informal and time will be allowed for discussion from the floor. The public is invited to attend and participate in the discussion.

A Season of Blessings

For four years, I have proudly served on the Executive Board of K-State Research and Extension in and for Barton County. Until I became involved in this capacity, I was naïve and really had no idea how many people, young and not so young, were reached by the programming shared by our local Agents. I honestly had never given it a thought Of course, I had heard of 4-H as have most. I believed it was just for farm kids with calves and goats. Was I ever misinformed!

USDA announces ranking dates for four major conservation initiatives

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced the ranking dates for the On-Farm Energy, Organic, Seasonal High Tunnel and Air Quality conservation initiatives. All four initiatives offer technical and financial assistance through the Natural Resources Conservation Service's (NRCS) Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the Great Bend High School library. Items on the agenda include updated information on the sale of the Shady Grove property, presentation of the 2010-2011 business audit, projected roofing plan/invitation to bid, approval of quote for replacement doors at Lincoln Elementary, presentation of district's three year technology plan, and fund raising policy for USD 428.

CPI employees attain ASPPA’s QPA designation

Tina Fredrick and Dyan Suppes of CPI Qualified Plan Consultants, Inc. (CPI) have recently passed all of the required exams to attain their QPA (Qualified Pension Administrator) designation through ASPPA (American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries). These exams include the Retirement Plan Fundamentals (RPF-1 & RPF-2) exams, the Defined Contribution Administrative Issues Basic Concepts (DC-1), Compliance Issues (DC-2), and Advanced Topics (DC-3) exams, and the Administrative Issues of Defined Benefit Plans (DB) exam.

Garden Club enjoys lesson on soap making

At the February Great Bend Garden Club meeting, member Alice Young introduced Rebecca Ford who gave a fascinating introduction to the art of soap making. Her inspiration and mentor was a sister at a convent in Wichita whose homemade soaps provided funds for a church mission project.

GODSPELL

Barton Natural Gas student James Mayes, 29, is knee-deep in his coursework to become a member of the natural gas industry, but he has always had the desire to be on stage. He found a way to do both and is a cast-member for the upcoming Barton Community College Theatre Spring Musical "Godspell," which opens Thursday at the college's Fine Arts Auditorium. The musical is at 7:30 p.m. March 5, 6, 7 and at 2 p.m. March 8.

​Louis J. Brummer 1924 - 2015

DOWNS - Louis Joseph Brummer died Feb. 27, 2015. He was born March 18, 1924, south of Downs to Ignatz and Anna Redeker Brummer. He attended High Prairie School, south of Downs. On Aug. 8, 1950, he married Cleo Marie Boberg. He worked as an elevator manager and grain inspector with Midway Coop in Corinth and Downs.

Jason Wayne Green 1981 - 2015

PAWNEE ROCK - Jason Wayne Green, 33, died Feb. 26, 2015, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Nov. 1, 1981, at Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Buck and Sally Green. He married Brandie Bunch March 23, 2013, at Larned. A Pawnee Rock resident, he was a kitchen manager for Gambino's Pizza.

LaVerna C. Moore 1934 - 2015

LaVerna C. Moore, 80, died Feb. 26, 2015, at the Hays Medical Center. Born April 11, 1934, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of G.F. and Christina (Cook) Ohnmacht. Originally from Olmitz, she married Walter B. Moore Jr. on Sept. 8, 1956, at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, Chicago, Ill. He died Oct. 17, 2002. A Great Bend resident since 1991, returning from Chicago, she was a homemaker.

Vicky Boger Trivett 1938 - 2015

SARASOTA, Fla. - Vicky Boger Trivett, 76, died on Feb. 21, 2015. Born May 17, 1938, in Ulm, Germany, she was the daughter of Fredrich and Rosa Bauder. On April 27, 1960, she married Richard Dean Boger in Columbus, Ga. The couple resided in Great Bend from 1960 to 1974, before moving to Ellinwood from 1974-2002. They owned Boger Pharmacy in Ellinwood and Boger Gift Gallery in Great Bend. On April 19, 2002, Richard passed away. On Oct. 3, 2003, Vicky married Preston Trivett. The couple resided in Sarasota, Fla.
