FORT WORTH, Texas - The Lord called Engle Scott, a retired U.S. Army colonel, home on Nov. 14, 2011. Engle Wayne Scott was born in Larned, on Jan. 20, 1937, the youngest of eight children of Silvey West Scott and Dixie Shumate Scott. Until the age of 5, he lived in Ash Valley, where his father was a grain elevator and feed store manager. During World War II, his family moved to Great Bend, where he graduated from high school in 1955. Hoisington awarded $75,000 in tax credits

HOISINGTON - NetWork Kansas announced today that Hoisington was selected as a 2011 Entrepreneurship (E-) Community and has been awarded $75,000 in tax credits, enabling the Hoisington area E-Community to raise $100,000 to be loaned to local businesses. Hoisington joins a group of twenty-nine other E-Communities.

Lowry elected Area 6 KAY president

HOISINGTON - Hoisington High School and Hoisington Middle School KAY members attended the Regional KAY Conference on Nov. 7 at Goddard. At the conference, HHS student Olivia Lowry was elected to serve as Area 6 KAY president. Candidates for this position gave a speech and answered an impromptu question. She will preside over future conferences and lead sessions at the KAY Leadership Camp this summer. Area 6 includes 40 KAY clubs from the south-central portion of Kansas.

Police investigate broken windows

The Great Bend Police Department is investigating multiple reports of broken windows on buildings. Lt. William Browne said the windows were shot with some sort of BB or pellet gun. In some cases windows were chipped, but in two or three cases the windows were shattered.

Crystal Irene Taylor 1928 - 2015

AMARILLO, Texas - Crystal "Chris" Irene Taylor, 86, died Jan. 20, at the Northwest Hospital in Amarillo, Texas, after a brief struggle with lung and heart disease. Born Oct. 3, 1928, in St. John, she was the daughter of Harold and Gladys Leitner. She graduated from St. John High School and soon married Melvin Taylor, who had returned from World War II. They lived in several western Kansas towns before moving to Oberlin in 1965. She was a former businesswoman in Oberlin. She lived in Oberlin until her husband's death in 1990. Cheryl Ann Harrell 1946 - 2015

ANDOVER - Cheryl Ann Harrell, 68, entered the arms of her Lord and Savior, March 29, 2015, at Life Care Center of Andover. Born Dec. 14, 1946, in Atchison she was the daughter of Wallace and Verdele Russell. In August 1965, she married the love of her life, Jon. She was a retired office manager for her husband's optometry practice. She worked with Jon in their offices in Larned and Great Bend, building his optometry practice until his death Jan. 1, 2006.

Maurice ‘Bryce’ Clark 1937 - 2015

HOISINGTON - Maurice "Bryce" Clark, 77, died March 30, at Cherry Village Residential Care in Great Bend. Born May 20, 1937, in Penokee, he was the son of John George and Margaret Elizabeth Clark. In 1955, he graduated from Hill City High School. He later served in the Army from 1960 to 1962. A Hoisington resident since 1962, he worked as a trackman for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad retiring in 1999. On June 1, 1985, he married Betty "JoAnn" Mullis at the First United Methodist Church in Hoisington. She survives.

Midwest Energy purchases City of Seward electric system

Residents of the city of Seward recently voted by a 3-to-1 margin to sell their city's electric system to Midwest Energy, Inc. On Mar. 25, Stafford County Commissioners certified the results of the mail-in ballot, making the vote official.
