Barton Community College has announced recipients of Achievement Scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year. These awards are administered by Barton's Financial Aid Office.
Army National Guard Spec. Graham D. Neeland has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
Great Bend High School senior, Colby Barton, was recently presented the school's highest agricultural honor, the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award, sponsored by Monsanto Company.
The League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold its monthly meeting at noon on April 12, an the Club at StoneRidge. The program will be provided by Jane Belanger of Heartland Farms who will be discussing climate change. Time will be provided for questions from the floor and discussion. Lunch will be from the menu. The public is invited to attend and participate.
Army National Guard Pvt. Tyler J. Brough has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training.
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by the Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Ambassador in charge will be Karmi Green, with greeters John Sullivan and Shay Kasselman. Coffee, doughnuts and door prizes will be available.
Lois Mosiman will celebrate her 85th birthday on April 13 with a surprise card shower.
Bill and Louise Besperat of Timken will celebrate their 60th anniversary on April 16, with a card shower.
Wayne and Theresa Schremmer of Wichita, will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a square dance/variety dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on April 27 at the Andover Community Center, 1008 East 13th Street, in Andover. Hosts for the event will be their children, Paula White, Pamela Long, Mark Schremmer, Brenda Rauber and Steve Schremmer; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to attend.
Nathan Jay and Shannon Marie Clanton announce the birth of their daughter, Zavannah May Clanton on March 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She weighed 6 lbs. 4 oz. and was 18 in long. She has a 5 year old big sister, Taiya Marie Clanton.
Gary and Cindy Parr and Kevin and Jamie Miller, announce the engagement of their daughter, Jennifer Sue Parr, to Corey Dean Long, son of Bob and Donna Long.
The following well-balanced and nutritious Friendship Meals will be served for lunch at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Meals are served with milk; donations for coffee and tea are accepted.

Barton Community College's Center for Adult Education will start its 9-week GED Preparation Class this Tuesday.
The Great Bend Evening Lions Club will not meet Monday, due to the Labor Day holiday. Instead, the next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the First Presbyterian Church, 24th and Washington. Anyone interested in the Lions Club is welcome.
There will be no Touched by Cancer support group meeting for the first week of September. There will be one meeting for the month, at 5:15 pm. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Heartland Cancer Center, 204 Cleveland St. in Great Bend.
Elfrieda Alice Mantz, 95, died Aug. 28 at Golden Living Center, Wilson. She was born Feb. 18, 1919, at Claflin,the daughter of Max Frederick and Mary Otillie (Kafka) Schlessiger.
UTICA - Patricia Ann (Hill) Stutz, 81, passed away Aug. 27, at her home near Utica, after a short illness. Born June 11, 1933, in Carthage, Mo., she was the daughter of Lee C. and Nellie P. (Berkebile) Hill. She grew up and attended school in Carthage, Mo. After graduation from Carthage High School in 1951, she worked at Big Smith (jeans) Company in Carthage, Mo., and volunteered with USO entertainers at Camp Crowder Army Base near Neosho, Mo. Gloria A. Janatello, 87, died Aug. 29, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Sept. 12, 1926, in Ellinwood, she was the daughter of Domingo and Ruth (Barth) Scotti. On Dec. 25, 1943, she married Peter Janatello in Great Bend. He died on Feb. 27, 2008. She was a lifetime resident of Great Bend and Barton County.
Sister Bertilla Brungardt, 86, died Aug. 28, in the Dominican Sisters' convent infirmary, Great Bend. Born Dec. 17, 1927, in Liebenthal as Germana Brungardt, Sister Bertilla was the daughter of the late Adam Joseph and Josephine Heili Brungardt. She was raised by her father and stepmother, Emma Wasinger Quint Brungardt. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community on Sept. 10, 1944, and pronounced her first vows on Aug. 13, 1947. She celebrated 65 years of religious profession in 2012.
