Guns Get Off Again

Saturday's verdict in the George Zimmerman trial has sparked national outrage, and rightfully so. And yet, with much of the focus on race, there is an accomplice to Trayvon Martin's death that has, to a surprising degree, escaped scrutiny and a seat in the dock- guns, and our lenient, permissive approach to them. The fact that it's a repeat offender makes matters even worse.

The Women's Fellowship of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 2400 21st St., is having a "priceless" rummage sale, Saturday, July 20 from 7:30-11:30 am. The sale will be set up the same way in the church as in other years; the difference is the items are not marked. Payment is by donation that is determined by the shopper.

Stephen Wesley Bell 1951 - 2013

TOPEKA - Stephen Wesley Bell, 62, died July 16 at Midland Hospice. Born Jan. 5, 1951, in Great Bend, he was the son of Elmer "Pete" and Bernice (Harding) Bell. He attended Great Bend High School and Fort Hays State University, graduating in 1973 with a degree in English.

Fidelis "Dale" Degenhardt 1929 - 2013

HAYS - Fidelis "Dale" Degenhardt, 84, died July 16 at the Golden Living Home in Wilson. Born July 1, 1929, in Pfeifer, he was the son of John and Emma (Basgall) Degenhardt. On Sept. 22, 1947, he married Edna Cantwell in Pfeifer. He was the service manager for Hartman Oil for many years.
