Thank you to all who have worn uniforms

This Veteran's Day, I want to thank all of those who have warn the uniform in service to our nation. Every November 11 we come together to honor their service and their sacrifice. And most important, to thank them.

Senior Menu

The following well-balanced and nutritious Friendship Meals will be served for lunch at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Meals are served with milk; donations for coffee and tea are accepted.

USD 428, Holy Family, Helping Hands and HeadStart Schools

The following meals will be served Nov. 11 through Nov. 15. The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.

New addition to the Grain Science Complex

With the official dedication of the O.H. Kruse Feed Technology Innovation Center on Oct. 11, Kansas State University's Grain Science Complex added another building, and increased opportunities for customer education, hands-on experience for students and enhanced research capacity.

USD 428 Board of Education meeting

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Office, 201 South Patton Road. Items on the agenda include approval of Title VI B and Early Childhood flow-through budget; approval of money awarded to the district in the federal E-Rate program; State Board of Education assessment update; Certificates of Merit recipients; Curriculum Day report; Focus EduVation online tutoring update; and project updates for Riley Elementary School HVAC, Great Bend High School track and Great Bend Middle School gym construction.

LWV meeting

The City of Great Bend's Community Coordinator, Christina Hayes, will provide an update on promotions being planned for the upcoming holiday season at the November meeting of the League of Women Voters. The luncheon meeting will be held over the noon hour on Nov. 12, in the north room of Montana Mike's, 906 McKinley.

ECF staff honored at governor’s residence as Employees of the Quarter

Samuel Liggett, Sarah Trevino, Richard Booher and Mary Perkins were honored November 6, at a reception at Cedar Crest, the governor's residence, for having been named employees of the third quarter at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility (ECF).

Barton County eligible for public assistance from FEMA

On Oct. 22, Barton County was declared eligible for Public Assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) due to severe storms and flooding that occurred throughout Kansas from July 22 through August 16. An Applicants' Briefing for township officials, cities, county, school districts and certain non-profit organizations within Barton County has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Barton County Courthouse, Room 101, Great Bend. This meeting is for public officials and officers from these agencies and organizations, and elected officials from these entities may be in attendance.

​Movies with a Message series to show ‘Strike’

Heartland Center for Spirituality in Great Bend will show the 2006 movie Strike in the continuing program Movies with a Message series. The movie begins at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, at the Dominican Sister Motherhouse, 3600 Broadway Ave. Refreshments will be served, and there will be discussion time after the movie. A freewill donation is requested.
