Sandzén painting donated

Shafer Art Gallery Director David Barnes (from left) and Barton Community College Foundation Director Darnell Holopirek pose with Joe Unrein and his mother Barbara Unrein Wednesday morning at Barbara's home in Great Bend. The Unreins donated a valuable Birger Sandzén painting to be added as part of the permanent collection at Barton's Shafer Art Gallery. Barbara has served on the gallery's advisory board and has been an active member of the local art community in Great Bend via Art Inc.

Wood Carvers' exhibit

Birds carved by Great Bend artist Robert Button fill a display case at the Great Bend Public Library. Examples of works by Button and other members of the Golden Belt Wood Carvers' Club can be seen at the library this week during regular hours. Guests are also welcome to visit the wood carvers, who meet from 7-9 p.m. every Thursday, unless it's a holiday, at the Great Bend Senior Center

OTIS - Doris Jean Tuzicka, 84, died Sept. 7, at home in rural Otis. She was born Jan. 24, 1929, at rural Otis, the daughter of William and Lillian (Johnson) Suchy. She married Clarence Tuzicka Jan. 10, 1951, at La Crosse.

​Leona Gertrude Karst 1920 - 2013

Leona Gertrude Karst, 92, died Sept. 6 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Oct. 6, 1920, in Hodgeman County, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Bitter) Niedens. She married Alvin Maier March 16, 1941 in Susank. He died in November 1945. She then married Constantine Karst April 8, 1947, at Milberger. He passed away Dec. 2, 1984. A homemaker, Mrs. Karst was a Great Bend resident since 2001, coming from Hoisington, and previously from the farm near Hoisington.

​Dorothy S. Wittrock 1925 - 2013

WICHITA - Dorothy S. Wittrock, 88, died Sept. 6 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born Aug. 17, 1925, at Strong City, the daughter of Harry E. and Josephine (Houdeshell) Sisson. She married Lloyd Ray Wittrock Dec. 22, 1957, at Great Bend. He died July 25, 1998. She was an elementary and special education teacher for Unified School District 428, Great Bend. Mrs. Wittrock was a longtime Wichita resident, coming from Great Bend.

OTIS - Ed Batchman, 68, died Sept. 6 at Rossville Health and Rehabilitation Center, Rossville. He was born Aug. 24, 1945, at Ellinwood, the son of Ernie and Bonnie (Baxter) Batchman. He married Connie Petz Sept. 24, 1971, at Ellinwood. Mr. Batchman was a longtime resident of Otis, working for BOC Gases as an electronic technician.

LARNED - Gonsalo (Steve) E. Lemuz, 63, died Sept. 5 at Methodist Hospital in Rochester Minnesota. He was born Dec. 10, 1949, at Larned, the son of Circilo and Josefa Marguez Lemuz. He worked in the Engineering Department at the Larned State Hospital and was a lifetime area resident.

The Central Kansas Association for the Visually Impaired will hold its annual Craft and Food Sale on the last weekend of September. The sale will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 28, at the Dominican Sisters Convent auditorium, 3600 Broadway Ave., Great Bend. Easy access is on the north side of the Convent off 17th St.
