MCPHERSON - Richard Henry Hinkson, 90, died Jan. 8 at McPherson Hospital. Born April 19, 1922 in Sylvan Grove, he was the son of Mildred (Murphy) and Fred S. Hinkson. He graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg and held graduate degrees from Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. He was an educator for nearly 40 years in the public schools of Kansas, 30 of which were spent in the public schools of Barton County. County Commission to meet Tuesday

Due to Barton County offices being closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Barton County Commission will hold its weekly agenda meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes the 2013 tax sale, proposals for audit services, a county adopt-a-highway program, a road vacation and a lease agreement for wildlife habitat development on county-owned land in Hoisington.

HCC honor students listed

Hutchinson Community College has announced the honor rolls for the Fall 2014 semester, including grades through the end of the interterm session. 1,317 students have been honored with selection to the two honor roll listings, with 663 achieving the President's Honor Roll with a 4.0 grade point average for the semester.

The Great Bend Area Panhellenic is a local organization for alumni of the Greek sororities belonging to the National Panhellenic Conference. One objective of the group is to promote interfraternity, friendship and collaboration among Greek alumni. Great Bend High School Bowling reults

On Thursday, the Great Bend Panthers hosted a triangular with Liberal and Holcomb. In girls action the Lady Panthers dominated the day by winning ten of the 11 WAC points possible. Senior Addie Soukup was the high bowler for the Lady Panthers as she rolled a top series of 562. Sophomore McKenzy Black finished in 3rd place as she rolled a series of 504. In junior varsity action the Lady Panthers made it a clean sweep as they swept the medal count. Junior Alex Snyder earned 1st place honors by rolling a 522 series. Ellinwood High School was the place to be this past Sunday! Many people came out to enjoy dinner sponsored by the EHS band, and then ventured on over to the library to see the Smithsonian Exhibit. Dr. Michael Zogry, from Kansas University was our featured speaker. His topic was "Faith and Basketball", and he discussed Dr. James Naismith's connection with basketball and religion.

Extension Programs Focus on Health and Wellness

It is fairly common that my educational programs and workshops emphasize a common theme of health and wellness. The annual Walk Kansas program is just around the corner, so it is time to start rounding up your team members for that successful program. Packets are ready for team captains to pick up at our office and the Great Bend Recreation Commission. I also plan to deliver some packets to the recreation commissions in Hoisington and Ellinwood.
