Golf Tourney set to benefit USD 428 schools
The Great Bend USD 428 Education Foundation's 13th annual benefit golf tournament will be held on Friday, April 29 at the Club at StoneRidge.
Barton men finish third at NJCAA championships
LUBBOCK, TEXAS - The Barton Community College men's track and field team was a solid 3rd place this past weekend the NJCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Cougars scored 84 points in the meet for third.
Archie "Galen" Allen
Archie "Galen" Allen, 73, died March 4 at home in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 25, 1938, at Great Bend, the son of Archie Roy and Rosetta Mae (Smiley) Allen. He married Barbara Leah Feaster on Jan. 1, 1963, at Windsor, Mo. She died June 29, 2006. He worked for the Boeing Company in Seattle, Wash., as an engineer. Mr. Allen was a lifelong resident of Great Bend, also living in Bozeman, Mont., Seattle, Wash., and Torrance, Calif.
Wilma G. Dannebohm
ELLINWOOD - Wilma G. Dannebohm, 75, died March 7 at Stafford County Hospital in Stafford. She was born May 3, 1935, at Midian, the daughter of Ted and Irene Waterman Zimmerman. She graduated from Ellinwood High School. A lifetime Ellinwood resident, she was a nurse at Ellinwood District Hospital, a florist at Flowers and Things and a secretary at Immanuel United Church of Christ, all of Ellinwood.
Gilbert Philip Rebel
NESS CITY - Gilbert Philip Rebel, age 84, passed away on March 5 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born on Feb. 18, 1927, in Schoenchen, the son of Joe and Lena Zimmerman Rebel. He was a farmer and he worked for Ness County road maintenance for 37 years.
Patrick A. Dunegan
KIMBALL, Neb. - Patrick A. Dunegan, 73, of Kimball, Neb., died March 3 at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colo. Born Sept. 6, 1939, in Ellinwood, he was the son of Patrick and Mildred (Powell) Dunegan. He was raised and attended school in Great Bend. He married Carol L. Wenger on Sept. 15, 1957, at Great Bend. The family moved to Kimball in 1958 and he worked with Curley Hensley doing metal fabrication in the oil field. He retired in 2007.
William W. "Bill" Legleiter
LIEBENTHAL - William W. "Bill" Legleiter, 85, of Liebenthal, passed away March 6 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. Born on Nov. 11, 1925, in rural Liebenthal, he was the son of Nick and Katie (Urban) Legleiter. He married Rita Giebler on Nov. 27, 1946, in Catharine. He was a farmer and stockman who was known to be a hard working man. He had served on the La Crosse Co-op Board and School Board and was a 4-H leader in Liebenthal.

Great Bend man faces charges of child porn
WICHITA - A Great Bend man appeared in federal court in Wichita Monday on charges of producing child pornography, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. Shawn Marshal Christiansen, 36, was charged with one count of producing child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography. In retrospect, those days may not have all been "good", but nonetheless, can all be looked at as part of early life for persons in their 50s and 60s. League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday at The Club at Stone Ridge. Lunch will be from the menu. The program will be provided by Phyllis Bosley, who will be speaking on the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome on children and ultimately the family. Food Bank donation
On a recent afternoon visit to the Barton County Food Bank the volunteers were scurrying about trying to assist local residents who were overflowing the waiting room, many with children in tow, hoping for emergency food assistance. It clearly demonstrated the urgency of ongoing needs still existing for local families in Barton County as well as the critical commitment needed from the community for ongoing financial support for this worthwhile endeavor.
Full entry takes 8th at State
On Saturday May 4th the Great Bend Forensics squad traveled to Emporia High School for the 5A State Championship Speech Tournament. They competed in 16 events, which gave them a full entry. Placing 8th out of 25 schools, the team had five events break into semifinals.

Power company and electrical contracting company crews were busy Wednesday morning cleaning up about a half-mile stretch of power poles north of Great Bend snapped and broken by violent winds that swept through the area Tuesday night.
