The man who reported being hit by a car as he was walking the night of Monday, March 19, now says the driver tried to run him over.

BISON - Alberta J. Freidenberger, 83, died March 23 at Hays Medical Center-Hadley Campus. Born Oct. 1, 1928 in Claflin, she was the daughter of Conrad and Mary (Kukula) Hoffman. In 1946, she graduated from Claflin High School. A resident of Rush County since 1949, she was a homemaker and a bus driver for USD 403 for 20 years. On May 22, 1949, she married Alex J. Freidenberger in Odin. Mrs. Freidenberger was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary and Women of Evangelical Lutheran Churches of America of Trinity Lutheran Church, both of Otis.

RUSSELL - James J. "Jim" Schumacher, 75, of Russell died on March 24 at the Russell Regional Hospital. Born on Feb. 28, 1937 in Park, he was the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Stecklein) Schumacher. He grew up and attended the country school near Grainfield. Later, he joined the United States Navy during the post Korean War era. RUSSELL - Ethel "Mae" Ricketts, 50, died March 25 at her home in Russell. Born Nov. 20, 1961 in Sterling, Colo., she was the daughter of Charles and Tonya Jane (Tootle) Denning. In 1981 she was married to Richard Ricketts in Great Bend. A resident of Russell, she was an LPN at various hospitals. She liked crocheting, quilting and reading.

PRATT - Laura Viola "Vi" Wagner, 79, died July 6, at South Wind Hospice in Pratt. Born Sept. 1, 1934, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Cash and Nellie Doty. On Jan. 30, 1959, she married Theodore (Nubbin) Heiter at Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death. She later married Bruce Wagner on May 23, 1986. He survives. She worked as a clerk at Crick's and also cooked for USD 382 and Pratt Regional Medical Center for a number of years. Her family was her passion.
James A. Norvell, 91, of Great Bend, died Sunday morning in Bartlesville, Okla. James spent his last few months at his son Brian's Bartlesville home. James Alfred Norvell was born the son of Ross and Georgie Fry Norvell on Sept. 14, 1922, in Piney, Ark. He grew up in various places until entering the United States Navy during World War II. During his service he served on various vessels and was present for the Allied Invasion of France. After his military service James went to western Kansas to do farm work. FREDONIA - Tom Stephen Welton, 67, a resident of Fredonia, formerly of Hoisington, and El Dorado, died July 5, at Fredonia Regional Hospital. Born Aug. 7, 1946, in Great Bend, he was the son of Donald E. and Mable (Roche) Welton. Tom was a graduate of Hoisington High School and received a bachelor's degree from Emporia State University. He was a retired office manager for Automotive Specialists in El Dorado.
