Hoisington church presents St. Lucia

HOISINGTON -On Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 11th and Vine Streets in Hoisington will present the story of St. Lucia, Child of Light. The 30-minute service will feature music, readings, prayer, and the compelling story of the girl who died for her faith and became the symbol of light amid the darkness. All are welcome for the service, fellowship, and refreshments.

Vincent E. “Vince” Malson 1941-2012

WOODBINE - Vincent E. "Vince" Malson, 71, of Woodbine, Georgia, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, at home. Born on August 21, 1941 at Ft. Scott, he was the son of Charlie and Lucille (George) Malson. The family lived in Erie and moved to Great Bend, where he graduated from Great Bend High School in 1959.

Dennis Patrick McGreevy 1952 - 2012

Dennis Patrick McGreevy, 60, died Dec. 9 at his home in Great Bend. Born April 19, 1952 in Great Bend, he was the son of William Stanley and June Lorraine (Murray) McGreevy. On April 23, 1976 he married Judy K. Bender in Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was an equipment operator for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Sandra K. Brinson 1946 - 2012

HOISINGTON - Sandra K. Brinson, 66, died Dec. 8 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born Oct. 4, 1946 at Yale, Okla., she was the daughter of Alvin M. Sr. and Mildred Faye (Lanning) Sweeden. A lifelong resident of Barton County, she graduated from Great Bend High School. On June 28, 1964, she married Loren (Gene) Brinson in Great Bend. She was employed by C.O. Mammels grocery store until they closed. She was a caregiver for many people throughout the years.

Ruby Lucille Blaz 1942 - 2012

HOISINGTON - Ruby Lucille Blaz, 70, died Dec. 8 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. Born Oct. 27, 1942 in Guymon, Okla., she was the daughter of Raymond and Helen (Smith) Steinkuehler. Ruby moved to Hoisington in 1986 coming from Guymon, Okla. She was brought up in the Nazarene Church and worked as a CNA for Texas County Memorial Hospital for many years. She enjoyed reading, traveling and music. On July 2, 1984 she married Rush Blaz in Great Bend.

Sister Sibyllina Mueller 1931 - 2012

Sister Sibyllina Mueller, 81, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 9 in the Dominican Sisters' Convent Infirmary in Great Bend. Born Jan. 10, 1931, in Wichita, as Theresa Susanne Mueller, Sister Sibyllina was the daughter of the late John and Sibylla (Ternes) Mueller. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community on Aug. 26, 1945, and pronounced her first vows June 10, 1948. She celebrated 60 years of religious profession in 2008.

Olinda Elizabeth “Linda” Ott 1921 - 2012

Olinda Elizabeth "Linda" Ott, 91, died Dec. 8 at Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit. Born Feb. 18, 1921 in Russell County, she was the daughter of Jacob and Mary Elizabeth (Hettinger) Tittel. On Jan. 9, 1949, she married I.L. "Bill" Ott in Milberger. He died on Jan. 10, 2007. A resident of Great Bend from 1963 to 2009, formerly of Russell, she was a homemaker.

GBHS Speech Team places 4th

At the Medicine Lodge Speech Tournament on Feb. 12, the Great Bend High School Speech Team qualified three more events to state. Becca Kay qualified to state in Original Oration by placing 2nd in the event. Hadley Murphy qualified in both Original Oration and Serious Solo Acting by placing 1st in both of the events. Sara Allen placed 6th in Original Oration and Becca Kay placed 5th Serious Solo Acting. "The team only brought four students and still placed 4th overall in sweepstakes out of 13 schools which is very impressive." stated GBHS speech coach Barbara Watson.
