Pathways December Employee of the Month

Tony Leal-Mendez has been named Pathways December Employee of the Month. Tony is a recent addition to the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) team. Due to the expansion of this department, he was added to the team in July. Since that time Tony has shown great initiative and compassion for the consumers he serves. He has helped to continue growth within the VR department enabling more individuals in need to be served. Most recently, he stepped up in the absence of the coordinator and kept things running smoothly for the consumers and employers in her absence.

HHS debaters honored

HOISINGTON - Recently, Hoisington High School sophomore Brandy Bodine and freshmen Robbie Willesden were named the Outstanding Debaters of the Cardinal Debate Team this past season. Robbie and Brandy, along with junior Jenny Fercking, earned letters in debate. All three were novice (first year) debaters.

Gene W. Boomhower 1933 - 2012

DIGHTON - Gene W. Boomhower, 79, died Dec. 29, 2012, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton. Born March 15, 1933, in Hoisington, he was the son of J.E. "Toots" and Amalia (Boxberger) Boomhower. Gene graduated from Hoisington High School with the Class of 1951. On March 23, 1952, he married Marlene Susank in Hoisington. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge he returned to Barton County to farm with his father and in 1963 moved to Lane County and was a lifelong farmer. He and Marlene celebrated their 60th wedding ...

Maxine C. Rogers 1911 - 2012

Maxine C. Rogers, 101, died Dec. 29 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born March 27, 1911 in Larned, she was the daughter of John William and Salina Ann (Ferree) Grizzle. On Jan. 2, 1932 she married Preston James Rogers in Ellinwood. He died on May 3, 1988. A resident of Great Bend since 1929, coming from Larned, she was a homemaker.

HOISINGTON - Michele Lynn Popp, 61, of Sedalia, Mo., passed away March 11, 2015, at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia, Mo. Born Aug. 11, 1953, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Eugene A. and Bobett T. Lott Beran. On June 1, 1974, she was united in marriage to Larry D. Popp, in Odin. Her life centered around her family. She also enjoyed cooking and sewing.

ELLINWOOD - Norman John Klepper, 95, died March 11, 2015, at Ellinwood District Hospital. He was born at his home in rural Ellinwood on June 23, 1919, to John and Mae (Arnsdorf) Klepper. Norman was a lifetime resident of Ellinwood, also living in Garfield for eight years. He attended Sts. Peter & Paul Grade School and was an Ellinwood High School graduate. State seeks national designation for Ark River

TOPEKA – Following on the success of the Kansas River being named a national water trail by the National Park Service in July 2012, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism wants the same designation for a portion of the Arkansas River in Kansas, including near Great Bend.
