Hays man dies, Great Bend teen seriously injured in I-70 collision

HAYS - A Great Bend teenager driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 was critically injured Friday night when the pickup he was driving hit an oncoming car, killing the other driver. A semitrailer then struck both disabled vehicles, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Banquet honors volunteers, showcases efforts

Entries at Kansas Junior Livestock Show reach 25-year high

WICHITA – The 81st-annual Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) promises to be a big event this year, with 795 youth from 92 counties entering 1,817 animals. This is the largest number of livestock entered in 25 years. The total includes 148 market steers, 354 breeding heifers, 325 market hogs, 103 breeding gilts, 301 market lambs, 246 breeding ewes, 249 meat goats and 91 commercial doe kids. The statewide event will be held September 20-23 at the Kansas Pavilions in Wichita.

Eight new Rural Opportunity Zones counties partner in student loan repayment program

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Commerce has announced that eight additional counties certified by the Kansas Legislature to participate in the Rural Opportunity Zones (ROZ) program have decided to partner with the state in the student loan repayment program. Doniphan, Haskell, Meade, Morris, Nemaha, Ottawa, Rice and Stevens counties have voted to opt in to this portion of the ROZ program.

Committee formed to provide disaster relief assistance

ELLINWOOD - A Long Term Recovery Committee has been formed to help provide assistance to area residents from the August flood. It has been difficult for some residents to repair damages. As the committee began looking at repairs, the initial estimates did not include significant damages to foundations.
