Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and its Ladies Auxiliary hosted representatives of Quilts of Valor presentation on Veterans Day, Nov. 11th. Quilts of Valor became a national organization with the beginning started by a Blue Star Mom, Catherine Roberts, of Seaford, Del., because of her son, Nathaniel's year long deployment to Iraq. The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 14 at Montana Mike's. President Rose Kelly called the meeting to order and led the flag salute. Becky Dudrey gave the invocation. A total of 50 were present, including five guests, John Basham, Donna Gales, Myrna Holthaus, Gordon Zahradnik and Rae Zahradnik.
On Dec. 14 more than 400 participated in Pittsburg State University's fall commencement exercises in the Garfield Weede Physical Education Building on the PSU campus. The certified public accounting firm of Adams, Brown, Beran & Ball, Chartered announces the addition of Shawna Robl to its team. Robl is an Ellinwood native and the daughter of Craig Robl and Waynette Stroda.
Great Bend Middle School announces the November and December Above and Beyond Winners. Each of these students were nominated by their teachers because they have gone above and beyond the call of duty in becoming a good citizen of GBMS. Ron and Bonnie Mink, formerly of Great Bend, will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a celebration at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 at Springfield Botanical Center in Springfield, Mo. Hosts for the event will be their children, Jessica Nelson and husband Andy of Great Bend and Detective Grant Mink and wife Aubrey of Topeka. The couple has four grandchildren, Emilee Nelson, Victoria Nelson, Scarlet Mink, and Ivy Mink.

ELLINWOOD - Norman John Klepper, 95, died March 11, 2015, at Ellinwood District Hospital. He was born at his home in rural Ellinwood on June 23, 1919, to John and Mae (Arnsdorf) Klepper. Norman was a lifetime resident of Ellinwood, also living in Garfield for eight years. He attended Sts. Peter & Paul Grade School and was an Ellinwood High School graduate. He married Anna Musenberg on Nov. 6, 1946, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church. She died on July 4, 1972. He later married June Hammer on Nov. 27, 1981, at St. Joseph's Church. She died May 6, 2011. TOPEKA – Following on the success of the Kansas River being named a national water trail by the National Park Service in July 2012, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism wants the same designation for a portion of the Arkansas River in Kansas, including near Great Bend.
