Brian Kramer was named Pathways Employee of the Month. He has been with Pathways for just a short time, but has already proven his dedication and caring for the clients of Pathways. Brian started as a Direct Support Worker, but was quickly promoted to House Lead based on his work performance. He makes an effort to get to know everything about the clients he helps and works hard to include them in many community activities. He is also very helpful in other houses and works many hours to ensure clients are well cared for.

The 14th Regiment Armory was built for the National Guard (née New York militia) in 1893. The massive Brooklyn structure was supposed to mimic the castles of Europe - brick towers and fortifications of previous centuries. Now a YMCA, the Armory today is a shelter (filled to capacity) with nursing home evacuees from Hurricane Sandy. The metaphor: What was built originally to protect us, has to be repurposed for a new type of foe.

If I were still a practicing ob-gyn and one of my patients said she was not going to vaccinate her child, I might try to persuade her to change her mind. But, if I were unsuccessful, I would respect her decision. I certainly would not lobby the government to pass a law mandating that children be vaccinated even if the children's parents object. Sadly, the recent panic over the outbreak of measles has led many Americans, including some self-styled libertarians, to call for giving government new powers to force all children to be vaccinated.
