TOPEKA – The second public draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) became available this afternoon on the Next Generation Science website, www.nextgenscience.org. Through Jan. 29, public comment is being sought on the standards, which are designed to clearly define and integrate the content and practices students will need to learn from kindergarten through high school graduation.
Irene Virginia Boxberger was born on Nov. 27, 1916 and grew up on the family farm in Russell County, the daughter of Emanuel and Mary Elizabeth Milberger Dumler. She attended Bunker Hill School and later Russell High School, graduating in 1932. She died Jan. 7, 2013 at her home in Great Bend.
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Curves of Great Bend, 2100 Washington, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Ambassador in charge will be Karmi Green with greeters Mary Foley, Nancy Sundahl. Coffee, refreshments and door prizes will be available.
"Kansas Forts and the Indian Wars", a reading and discussion series led by Leo Oliva, PhD, will begin from 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan.13 at the Kinsley Library. There is still time to sign up for this once-a-month series featuring visits to Fort Larned, Fort Dodge and Fort Hays in February, March, and April, respectively. Dr, Oliva will facilitate group discussions over readings. There will be guided tours of the forts, and interpretive presentations. The Great Bend High School Debate Team traveled to Wichita East high school and competed at the Sunflower Novice State Championship Tournament on Jan. 4-5. Two teams from the squad qualified to State and competed against 123 teams. GBHS teams competed in the 10th-12th grade division. The sophomore team of Jordan Otten and Kameko Schultz barely missed qualifying into the elimination rounds by a couple of quality points, but they tied with the other schools in the elimination brackets on win-loss records.
