GBHS Speech Team already qualifies for State Championship Tournament

The Great Bend High School Forensics team traveled to the Kingman Invitational Forensics tournament on Jan. 26th. Four members competed in two events in the first tournament of the season, which consisted of (freshman) Clara Kachanes, (sophomore) Sarah Keller, (senior) Chase Pumford, and (sophomore) Kameko Schultz. All three students that competed in Humorous Solo Acting, qualified to finals. Placing 1st was Chase Pumford, placing 5th was Sarah Keller, and placing 6th was Kameko Schultz. James Jonathan (Jim) Teeter 1968 - 2013

WINDOM - James Jonathan (Jim) Teeter, 44, of Windom die on Jan. 24 in rural McPherson. Born on Aug. 16, 1968 in Lindsborg, he was the son of Billie J. (Buffington) and James A. Teeter. He attended the Marquette grade schools and Marquette High school and graduated from Little River High School in 1986. He then attended Fort Hays State University. On Sept. 12, 1992 he was united in marriage to Jo Davenport in Great Bend. He was employed by Wear Tech in shipping and receiving in McPherson.

Louise M. Lehning 1920 - 2013

DeleteHOISINGTON - Louise M. Lehning, 92, died Jan. 26 at Logan Manor in Logan. Born July 28, 1920 in Sedalia, Mo. she was the daughter of Luther Roscoe and Mary Elizabeth (Phillips) Marcum. On June 30, 1948 she married Jonathan Lehning in Susank. He died on April 4, 1989. Louise worked for many years at the Town and Country grocery store in Hoisington. She also managed the Peter Pan Ice Cream Store in Hoisington, later working for Fuller Brush in Great Bend, from which she retired.

Pierre “Perry” Reed DeYoe 1929 - 2013

WICHITA - Pierre "Perry" Reed DeYoe, 83, died Jan. 26 at Lake Point Nursing Home in Wichita. Born April 29, 1929 in Wichita, he was the son of Garland and Thelma (Harrison) DeYoe. On June 5, 1949 he married Evelyn Gasswint in Wellington. He was a Parts Manager for Several Different Trucking Companies in Kansas.

ELLINWOOD - Marjorie M. "Margie" Long, 92, died Jan. 22 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born Feb. 11, 1920 in Barton County, she was the daughter of August and Pruella Hager Christiansen. She was a 1938 graduate of Ellinwood High School. On Sept. 21, 1937, she married Frederick Long in Hutchinson. He died on Aug. 20, 1999. A resident of Ellinwood all of her life, she was a homemaker.

Michael James Smith 1946 - 2013

EDMOND, Okla. - Michael James Smith, 66, of Edmond, Okla. passed away on Jan. 25. Born on Aug. 11, 1946 in Great Bend, he was the son of Steve and Gwendolyn Smith. On Aug. 18, 1967 he married Donna Saint. She died on Jan. 8, 2012. They had two children, David and Matthew. He was employed for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Okla. as a contract editor and writer.

Blazers place second

The Barton Blazers took second place in the Shawnee Mission/Overland Park Premiere basketball tournament. The Blazers defeated the Reno County Elite, Beastmode, Bobcats, and CNBA. They lost in the championship game to Missouri Flight. The Blazers will be playing at home this coming weekend in the Great Bend MAYB tourney. Players include, Brock Skelton, Evan Campbell, Nick Wondra, Chance Sanger, Ray Kuhlman, Connor Griffith, Sam Ryan, and JJ Heredia.
