CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Gary Dean Southard, born George Gary Dean Southard on Jan. 16, 1935, passed away on Jan. 24 at Broward General Medical Center with family at his bedside, from complications of heart disease. A resident of Coral Springs, Fla., since 1978, he was born in Hutchinson and raised in Great Bend. Before coming to Great Bend, his family followed their father in the oil fields in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Gary graduated from Great Bend High School.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission has a few openings left for its American Red Cross Baby-sitters Training later this month, GBRC Program Coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick said. Many people would balk at the prospect of a half dozen teenaged boys roaming about under their roof. Just the logistical challenge of feeding them would test the resolve of most. So what can be realistically be done to deal with pesticide resistance once it happens? When pests develop resistance to pesticides, it is a difficult challenge but in most cases not an impossible one. The key to the effectiveness of these management practices include cost, time, markets and climate. Also remember we are speaking about resistance developing in insects and diseases, not just weeds.
