Activities of city department recapped

At Monday night's Great Bend City Council meeting, City Administrator Howard Partington gave an update on the activities of various city departments in the past couple weeks. Below is a summary of some of the highlights.

GBHS Debate places two teams and places fourth overall

The Great Bend High School Debate Team competed in their third tournament weekend of competition. They had five debate teams compete at the Buhler debate tournament on Saturday Oct. 13th. Two teams competed in the open division and three in the novice division. One open team placed and one novice team placed. In the open division Michael Gieck and Kameko Schultz placed second with a five and zero win loss record and twenty speaker points. "My partner and I did very well as a team together" Schultz stated. It’s Come Down to Benghazi and Big Bird

In the 1967 film, "A Guide for the Married Man," a worldly businessman, played by Walter Matthau, takes a younger man, portrayed by Robert Morse, under his wing to teach him how to cheat on his wife. In one scenario, Matthau's character describes how a philandering husband should always deny his adultery, even when caught in the act. To illustrate this point, a skit is enacted wherein a man, played by Joey Bishop, is caught by his wife, in bed with his mistress.

Gwen L. Sell 1922-2012

LACROSSE--Gwen L. Sell, 89, died Oct. 14 at the Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, La Crosse. Born Nov. 23, 1922, in Wallace, she was the daughter of Leo W. and Minnie I. (Bitter) Frazier. A lifelong resident of Rush County, she was a 1940 graduate of La Crosse High School. On July 6,1946, she married Vernon "Sam" Sell in Reno, Nevada. He preceded her in death March 10, 1994.

Sister Ruth Klein OP 1915 - 2012

Sister Ruth Klein, 97, died Oct. 13, in the Dominican Sisters of Peace Convent Infirmary in Great Bend. Born Jan. 22, 1915, in Lincoln Neb., as Ruth Rose Klein, Sister Ruth was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Helen Hoffman Klein. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community in Great Bend July 2, 1930, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 17, 1933. She celebrated seventy-five years of religious profession in 2008. Sister Ruth began her ministerial life as a teacher of grades 1 – 4 in 1934, but she will be most remembered for her education and ministry in music ...

Leona M. Leiker 1924 - 2012

LACROSSE - Leona M. Leiker, 88, died Oct. 14 at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse. Born May 20, 1924, in Pfeifer, she was the daughter of Casper and Mary (Schmidt) Jacobs. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County. A 1942 graduate of Bison High School, she was a clerk for the United States Postal Service before her retirement in 1979. On Feb. 6, 1945, she married Ralph J. Leiker at St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse. He preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 2005.

Farm expo coming to town

The 2015 Great Bend Farm and Ranch Expo will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 8, 9, and 10, 2015 in Great Bend. The show is located at the Expo Complex west of town. The show hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on the 8th, 9 a.m.- 7 p.m. on the 9th and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the 10th with extended hours on Thursday.
