Hoisington debate team finishes season

HOISINGTON -In the last tournament of the season, Hoisington High School debaters Robbie Willesden and Erica Schwager went 3-2 at Pratt and earned a 10th place finish out of 32 varsity teams. They defeated two Valley Center teams and a Nickerson teams. They lost to teams from Wichita-Independent and Kingman. Abi Hurter served as the alternate.

Theresa H. Dykes Carlson 1931-2012

Theresa H. Dykes Carlson, 81, did Dec. 16, in Salina. Born Feb. 27, 1931 at Beaver, she was the daughter of Joseph F. and Teresa (Hoffman) Hipp. On July 15, 1950, she married Billy Dykes in Great Bend. He died March 24, 1995. She then married Phil Carlson Sept. 1, 2000, in Great Bend. He survives.

Ruth W. Wynn 1925 - 2012

SOUTH HUTCHINSON - Ruth W. Wynn, 87, died Dec. 15 at Mennonite Friendship Manor in South Hutchison. Born May 31, 1925 in Chase, she was the daughter of Fred Leslie and Sara Maude Elliot Willard. In 1943 she graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont. On Dec. 18, 1977 she married Phillip G. Wynn Hr., in Sterling. He died on Oct. 28, 2012. Formerly of Great Bend and Ellinwood, with winters spent in McAllen, Texas, she was a receptionist at Sterling Drilling Company for 14 years.

Chamber open late for last-minute gift certificate sales

This Thursday, the staff of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development will be making it easier than ever to take care of last-minute Christmas shopping by staying open until 7 p.m. to fill gift certificate orders.

County lists holiday hours

Barton County Office Buildings will be closed both Monday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday, Dec. 25, in observance of the Christmas holiday. The Records Division of the Sheriff's Office and the Health Department will be closed at this same time. The Landfill will close to the public at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 24, and will be closed on Christmas. Emergency services will be in normal operation.

Mr. and Mrs. Lynn A. Welch, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, December 22 with a reception from 2-5 p.m. at the J.A. Haas Building, 400 East 18th, Larned. Lynn and the former Judi Ellis, were married on Dec. 22, 1962 in Larned.

The secondary schools also have available daily: Main dish second choices, chef's salad, combo lunches and choice of vegetables and dessert. The breakfast menu is offered only to students in USD 428. Menus are subject to change without notice. Milk served with all meals. All meals as offered meet USDA nutritional guidelines.

Jackie Stiles to be inducted into National High School Hall of Fame

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- Jackie Stiles, the legendary basketball and track and field star at Claflin High School during the 1990s, is among 12 individuals who will be inducted into the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) National High School Hall of Fame July 2 at the New Orleans Marriott in New Orleans, Louisiana.
