County clerk: 1 in 5 vote early

Library announces special hours, retirement celebration

Anna M. Boor 1913 - 2012

ODIN - Anna M. Boor, 98, died July 22 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Nov. 4, 1913 in Odin, she was the daughter of Joseph V. and Frances M. (Tinkel) Jenisch. On April 23, 1941 she married Nick F. Boor in Odin. He died on June 25, 1998. A lifetime resident of Odin, she was a retired homemaker and farmer.

Carolyn Sue Brown 1944 - 2012

LYONS - Carolyn Sue Brown, 68, died July 21 in Great Bend. Born June 1, 1944 in Shidler, Okla. she was the daughter of Homer Walter and Clara (Clapp) Spencer. On June 23, 1961 she married Dearl D. Brown in Lyons. He died on Feb. 11, 2009. A resident of Great Bend for the last five years, formerly of Lyons, she was employed in retail management and was an Army wife.

James “Jim” Melvin Tucker 1946 - 2012

ST. JOHN - James "Jim" Melvin Tucker, 66, died July 21 at his home in St. John. Born on Feb. 8, 1946 in Stafford, he was the son of Melvin A. and Ellen E. (Branham) Tucker. A life-long resident of St. John, he was an oil field worker and case manager for Rosewood Services in Great Bend. On Sept. 20, 1970, he married Donna M. Blanding at St. John. She survives of the home.

Wrestling results for Hoisington High School for C.K.L. tournament

The Hoisington Wrestling team came as close as a team can come in not winning a team championship at the Central Kansas League tournament hosted by Hoisington this past Saturday. The team lost by just a mere 1/2 point to Smoky Valley High School. Making it even tougher on the Cardinals was that they had the fire power to have won the tournament, if they had been able to be at full strength. Former GBHS wrestler qualifies for NJCAA Wrestling Nationals

Former Great Bend High School wrestler Zachary Schridde qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association Wrestling Nationals in the 133-pound weight class. Schridde placed fourth for the Pratt Beavers on Feb. 14, at the West Central District Regionals hosted by Colby Community College. Eight colleges participated including colleges from Oklahoma and Arkansas. Pratt Community College Beavers qualified a total of seven of their nine wrestlers for the National Tournament on Feb. 27-28, held in Des Moines, Iowa. The Pratt Beavers are coached by Ken Kepley.

Barton splits at Western Nebraska after games moved

The home opener was put on hold. Due to the weather expected in Great Bend over the weekend, the Barton Community College baseball team switched venues for its 4-game series.

Cougars take game on road; sweep Allen to move to 6-0

After rolling to a 4-0 start at home to start the 2015 season, the Barton Community College softball team hit the road for the first time Saturday. And it wasn't a short trip either. The Cougars traveled to far southeast corner of the state to battle Allen County in Iola.

Lyle J. Lang 1942 - 2015

Lyle J. Lang, 73, died Feb. 15, at his home in Great Bend. Born Feb. 15, 1942, in Great Bend, he was the son of Frank and Gertrude (Eckert) Lang. On Oct. 24, 1966, he married Nancy Weber in Great Bend. They later divorced. A lifetime area resident, he was a truck driver for Meadow Gold Dairy, Santa Fe Trucking and Kansas Brick and Tile.

​Great Bend man injured when van hits tree

A Great Bend man was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita late Monday morning after a one-vehicle collision on U.S. 281, 2 miles south of Great Bend. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at 11:57 a.m.
