LAWRENCE - Bernice "Betti" L. Alexander, 94, of Lawrence, passed away Jan. 14 at a nursing home in Lawrence. Born March 5, 1917, in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of Albert H. and Esther (Brackett) Ladue. She graduated from high school and then attended one year of college. On July 28, 1944, she married Col. Leland "Alex" Guy Alexander in in Schenectady, N.Y. He preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 2005. She then married Joseph McLaughlin in Lawrence. He preceded her in death in February of 2011.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - John Donovan Neeland died at his home in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Jan. 12. The son of Donovan and Mary Agnes "Mamie" (Risse) Neeland, he was born in Great Bend on Nov. 6, 1930. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1949 and attended Kansas State University. On Jan. 31, 1953, he married Elaine Habiger. They later divorced. He then married Imogene Wilson. She died on Jan. 3, 1994. He married Emma Greenlee on May 31, 1995, in Colorado Springs. At least five whooping cranes are believed to be spending the winter in south-central Kansas, according to sightings being monitored by staff from both Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms State Wildlife Area. Although some sightings have been on either Cheyenne Bottoms or Quivira, most have been on private lands in the surrounding region. The endangered whooping cranes, in three separate groups, include a family group of three (2 adults and one juvenile), a lone juvenile bird, and a single adult that has primarily been observed within a large flock of Sandhill Cranes.
