Shell may be ready for the Arctic, but its oil spill barge isn’t

SEATTLE – A unique ice-class barge designed to clean up any oil spills that might result from Shell Alaska's upcoming operations in the Arctic Ocean has so far failed to acquire final U.S. Coast Guard certification. Engineers from the oil company say it's no longer appropriate to require them to meet the rigorous weather standards originally proposed.

VA mobile office coming to Great Bend this week

The Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs Mobile Office is coming to Great Bend this week. The air-conditioned mobile office staffed with veteran service representatives will be at the Great Bend Dollar General store, 5318 10th street, from 2-7 p.m. Today, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Veterans can learn more about VA and state benefits and even apply for benefits on site. Vaccine Controversy Shows Why We Need Markets, Not Mandates

If I were still a practicing ob-gyn and one of my patients said she was not going to vaccinate her child, I might try to persuade her to change her mind. But, if I were unsuccessful, I would respect her decision. I certainly would not lobby the government to pass a law mandating that children be vaccinated even if the children's parents object. Sadly, the recent panic over the outbreak of measles has led many Americans, including some self-styled libertarians, to call for giving government new powers to force all children to be vaccinated.
