Russell Churches Care raises money for local food bank

RUSSELL - The Russell Association of Churches has a new moniker, Russell Churches Care. Ministerial Alliance president, the Rev. Roger Dennis, of St. John Lutheran Church revealed the new theme in coordination with the initial event to be held Sunday, Oct. 28, at Russell High School's Shaffer Field.

Association of Churches to serve soup for Barton County Emergency Aid

Barton County Association of Churches is planning its annual soup supper, which will take place from 4:30-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at the Prince of Peace Parish Center in Great Bend. A freewill donation will be taken, and all can enjoy soup and pie or cake, organizers said. Dine-in and carryout will be available.

ELLINWOOD - Barton County children who receive a diagnosis of cancer will be the beneficiaries of the 2nd Annual Kans for Kids Shrimp Boil and Auction to be held Sat., Oct. 20 at Lone Wolf Restaurant, 111 E. 2nd, Ellinwood. The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m. Bidding on silent auction items will be from 5:30 until dinner with the live auction at 7 p.m.

Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.

Thunder on the Plains opens NHRA West Central Division

S.R.C.A Dragstrip will host Thunder on the Plains on May 15-17 at 455 W. Barton County Rd.; 2½ miles west of Great Bend on the old Air Force base. The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.
