Birthday donation

Drew Nicholson, left, and Sam Hall celebrated their 9th birthdays by requesting donations for Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation rather than birthday gifts. The $145 donation was placed in the Becky Nicholson/Kans for Kids Scholarship that is given to any graduating high school senior that has received assistance from Kans for Kids while they battled cancer. The boys, both students of Holy Family School in Great Bend, were presented with certificates of appreciation.

Leora D. Hammond Kristufek 1914 - 2012

LARNED - Leora D. Hammond Kristufek, 98, died May 5 at the Golden Living Center in Wilson. Born Jan. 25, 1914 in Grigston, she was the daughter of William and Ina Fay Watson Nulf. On April 26, 1930 she married C.G. Hammond. He died on Nov. 21, 1971. On Sept. 21, 1977 she married Carl Kristufek in Dillon, Mont. He died on Feb. 27, 1988. A longtime area resident, she owned and operated the Hammond Holiday Home.

Maurice L. “Maurie” Claassen 1921 - 2012

Maurice L. "Maurie" Claassen, 91, died May 5 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born Feb. 9, 1921 in Newton, he was the son of Cornelius and Addie (Lander) Claassen. After meeting Ruth McIlrath at the University of Kansas, Maurie and Ruth were married on Nov. 25, 1945 in Great Bend. Ruth died on July 14, 1982. A longtime resident of Great Bend, he worked in the insurance industry initially for McIlrath Insurance Agency and retiring from Thurman Morrison and Associates.

Carpenter's grandson recalls history of chapel woodwork

The woodwork for the chapel in Central Kansas Medical Center, now St. Rose Health Center, was crafted by Herman Dreiling from Hays. Herman, born in Victoria in 1896, was the father of Noreen (Dreiling) Duncan. Noreen and her husband James Duncan were residents of Great Bend from 1951 to 2013. They moved to Lenexa in 2013 to be closer to their children who all live in the Johnson County area. All four children (John, Tim, Mike, and Ann) graduated from Great Bend High School.

Both the Great Bend boys and girls bowling teams started off their 2015 WAC seasons with home wins against the visiting Dodge City Red Demons. The Panther boys dominated the entire match as they earned all 11 points possible in the contest. The Panthers were led by senior Jeff Meitler who had an exceptional day. The senior captain for the Panthers rolled games of 200 - 278 – 265 in route to a first place finish with a 743 series. Senior Matt Black captured 2nd place honors by rolling a 610 series.
