WICHITA - Gene Roberson, 74, passed away on June 16 surrounded by his family at St. Francis Hospital. He was born on June 17, 1936 in Great Bend. After serving in the United States Army, he spent his career as a sales representative of wholesale steel products until his retirement.
BARTLESVILLE, Okla.- Alice Marie Willcut, 80, resident of Bartlesville, Okla., died June 11. Born Aug. 1, 1930 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Lowell E. and Elizabeth (Whittig) Willcut. She was raised and received her education in Great Bend, graduating from Great Bend High School in 1948. She attended Kansas City Business College for two years, then moved to Memphis, Tenn., where she was employed with Phillips Petroleum Company until her retirement. Great Bend police are investigating a report of an aggravated battery. The alleged victim told police Thursday even that two males battered him at 2100 Broadway Ave. and stole $120 from him.

The Great Bend High School Speech team placed in 11 events at the Nickerson Speech Tournament. Those placing were Makinna Dykes, Kris Gieck and Ashtin Heath. Ashtin placed in both of her events. Those placing in all of their events and qualifying for the State Speech Championship Tournament in May are Malia Clark, Jesus Sandoval and Carter Sheffield. Carter Sheffield also won the Triathlon Award by placing the highest in all three of his events. He placed 1st in Extemporaneous Speaking, 1st in Serious Solo Acting and 3rd in Impromptu Speaking. The team placed 3rd overall.
