​No jam session at Russell this month

RUSSELL - The regularly scheduled "Pickin' at the Deines" will not be held this Sunday, due to the large number of participants who will be at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield. Pickin' at the Deines is a jam session and pot-luck dinner that is usually held on the third Sunday of each month. The next one will be on Oct. 21. The jam session will start at 3 p.m. and the supper at 5 p.m.

​Pink pig yard ornament missing

The theft of a pink pig yard ornament from outside a Great Bend apartment is the subject of this week's Crime Stoppers report. Police Chief Dean Akings said that sometime between 5 p.m. on Aug. 31 and noon on Sept. 1, a concrete pig was stolen from 3900 Forest Ave., Apartment 8. "This yard ornament was 3 feet long and 2 feet wide and weighed 400 pounds. The base was green and the value of this ornament was $300. ​St. Francis offering free training for prospective foster parents

St. Francis Community Services will offer a free course for individuals interested in becoming foster parents. The course begins Oct. 9 and will be held every Tuesday for 10 weeks from 6-9 p.m. at Saint Francis Community Services, 1508 Main, Great Bend.

Great Bend Zoo silent on accreditation; Topeka Zoo earns AZA nod for 5 years

(AP) - Great Bend officials are refusing to discuss last week's meeting with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums board in Phoenix, Ariz. Zoo Director Scott Gregory attended a meeting Saturday where the board was set to approve or deny AZA accreditation for the Brit Spaugh Zoo.

Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.

Thunder on the Plains opens NHRA West Central Division

S.R.C.A Dragstrip will host Thunder on the Plains on May 15-17 at 455 W. Barton County Rd.; 2½ miles west of Great Bend on the old Air Force base. The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000.
