Marsh Musings

Our marsh got a sip of water this past week. There was enough rain to put some sheet water in a few spots in the Bottoms and the magic began! Overnight a group of pelicans appeared. Ducks, geese and cranes are suddenly present in significant numbers.

First Kansas announces promotions

Paul Snapp, president and CEO of First Kansas Bank, announced the promotions of Patty Strube to assistant vice president and Angela Campbell to vice president and facility manager of the First Kansas Bank location in Great Bend. "Patty Strube is a model for our Bank Team," Snapp said. Strube's role in customer service will continue to expand. She has been with the Bank for nine years in a variety of positions.

LARNED - Wilbur Dean Dirks, 84, passed away Nov. 22 at his home in Larned. He was born March 7, 1928 in Pawnee County, the son of John Jacob Dirks and Anna Marie George. He was a resident of both Larned and Wichita. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Larned and attended Evangel Assembly of God, Wichita.

BROWNELL - Dennis Dale Michel, 64, died Nov. 22, 2012 at Ness County Hospital, Ness City, to join God's Thanksgiving feast, after his long three year battle with peritoneal mesothelioma cancer. He was born June 3, 1948 in Great Bend, the son of Walter and Fern (Keatley) Michel. Dennis was a lifetime resident of Ness County and was proud of his heritage, coming from an 1867 century farm in Ness County.

Jobs that don’t exist yet

This past Tuesday at the regular meeting of the Barton Community College Board of Trustees, members of the various advisory boards assisting the various technical programs spoke to the Trustees. They discussed their service on the appropriate advisory board, how programs at Barton have benefitted their industry, and what they saw as the future needs in their area. Agriculture was well represented by Andrew Murphy from ILS and Marvin Rose from the Great Bend Coop. With their input both the crop and livestock aspects of agriculture were represented.
