Great Bend Public Library will begin operating under summers at the end of the month. Effective May 31, the library will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. It will be closed on Sundays.
The Barton Community College Foundation presented the 2011 Distinguished Service Award to Dr. William "Bill" and Mary King during Barton's 41st commencement on Thursday. Although unable to attend in person, the Kings were recognized for years of involvement with the college.
Jared Marcuson and Will Hodges were named Barton Community College's 2011 Outstanding Graduates. Dean of Student Services Angie Maddy introduced them and presented their awards as they took the opportunity to address their fellow graduates during the college's 41st commencement ceremony on Thursday.

Rick Long, Farmers Insurance agent in Great Bend, has completed the Career Agents Course at the University of Farmers. The University of Farmers training facility, located in Agoura Hills, Calif., was officially dedicated November 3, 2006.
ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood Rotary Club, in cooperation with the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce, is in the process of organizing the After Harvest Festival Parade to be held Saturday, July 16, at 10 a.m. Line-up will begin at 9 a.m. on Park Street on the west edge of Ellinwood.

Preceptor Delta Zeta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi announces the recipients of this year's scholarships. Ellinwood High School seniors receiving the scholarships include: Rana Ahmadi, CJ Bookout, Jacob Christiansen, Montara Johansen, Derek Moos, Brittany Pflughoeft, Reba Thomas, and Brett Whelan. Each student will receive a $200 scholarship.

Evelyn Anna Hochstatter, 96, died Feb. 22 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. Born Feb. 25, 1917 at Holyrood, she was the daughter of John and Katie A. (Schmitt) Ehler.
Doris J. Nitzel, 86 years, longtime Great Bend resident, passed away on Thursday evening, Feb. 20, 2014 at the Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend after a brief illness. Doris was born on Oct. 21, 1927 at Fairbury, Neb. to Moses G. and Grace (Eilts) Williams. She graduated from Endicott High School at Endicott, Neb. in 1946, and was united in marriage to Robert Dale Nitzel on Feb. 9, 1947 at Endicott. Doris was an Accounting Clerk for various businesses for many years prior to her retirement. She was an active volunteer for RSVP, and delivered Meals On Wheels ...
TRES PIEDRAS, N.M. - Carl Don Nicholas Bradley, Sr., 65, died Feb. 20 at his ranch in Olmitz, Kans. Born Dec. 6, 1948 at Santa Fe, N.M., he was the son of John Carver and Winifred (Wright) Bradley.

ELLINWOOD -The Ellinwood School/Community Library is excited to welcome national award winning author Cynthia Kadohata to the Ellinwood library for a series of events during the first week of March. The schedule of events includes presentations to student groups, student book signings, and question and answer sessions on Wednesday, March 5th.
Approximately 121 calls for service and 112 officer initiated calls were received for the month of January. Officers responded to 11 medical/fire calls. Ten arrests were made and four criminal summonses were served in the month of January.
