Joyce A. French 1935 - 2012

AUGUSTA - Joyce A. French, 76, Augusta, died March 22 at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was born on April 15, 1935, in Ponca City, Okla., the daughter of Anthony G. and Ruth P. Casteel Brizendine. On Aug. 14, 1954, she married Lyle D. French in Eureka. He preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1982. She graduated from Eureka High School and then attended Emporia Teachers College. She worked as a secretary and a bookkeeper.

Naomi Janell (Jan) Williams 1926 - 2012

Naomi Janell (Jan) Williams died on March 9. Born on June 9, 1926, in Hayworth, Okla., she was the daughter of William McKinley "Bill" Whala and Lessie Whala. In 1943 she graduated from Ellinwood High School. She retired from Civil Service at Tinker Air Force Base.

Lenora Jean McMillan 1929 - 2012

TOPEKA - Lenora Jean McMillan, 83, of Topeka, went home to be with her Lord on March 23, at her home. She was born Feb. 11, 1929, in Fort Scott, the daughter of Eugene and Edith Duncan Johnston. She attended Great Bend High School and obtained an Associate of Arts Degree in Nursing from Barton County Community College. The early years of her life were spent raising her family in Great Bend before moving to Topeka in 1975.

B. Marie Schwartz 1929 - 2012

B. Marie Schwartz, 82, died March 22 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born April 16, 1929, at Liebenthal, the daughter of Alex and Mary (Doerfler) Pfeifer. She married Maurice C. Schwartz on July 29, 1947, at Liebenthal. She was a nurse's aide and volunteer at Central Kansas Medical Center. Mrs. Schwartz was a Great Bend resident most of her life, coming from Liebenthal.

Carpenter's grandson recalls history of chapel woodwork

The woodwork for the chapel in Central Kansas Medical Center, now St. Rose Health Center, was crafted by Herman Dreiling from Hays. Herman, born in Victoria in 1896, was the father of Noreen (Dreiling) Duncan. Noreen and her husband James Duncan were residents of Great Bend from 1951 to 2013. They moved to Lenexa in 2013 to be closer to their children who all live in the Johnson County area. All four children (John, Tim, Mike, and Ann) graduated from Great Bend High School.

Both the Great Bend boys and girls bowling teams started off their 2015 WAC seasons with home wins against the visiting Dodge City Red Demons. The Panther boys dominated the entire match as they earned all 11 points possible in the contest. The Panthers were led by senior Jeff Meitler who had an exceptional day. The senior captain for the Panthers rolled games of 200 - 278 – 265 in route to a first place finish with a 743 series. Senior Matt Black captured 2nd place honors by rolling a 610 series.
