Life jackets, supervision essential to boating safety

TOPEKA - Whether it's during vacation or part of an ordinary summer day, boating can be fun for the entire family – as long as everyone remains safe. The U.S. Coast Guard reports an estimated 85 percent of boating-related drowning could be prevented by the use of life jackets. Nationally, of the children who drowned while boating in 2003, more than 60 percent were not wearing life jackets.

New GBMS gym to become reality

Now that the USD 428 Board of Education has approved the addition of seventh-grade competitive sports, the need for a new gymnasium addition at Great Bend Middle School is more critical than ever. Business Director Dan Brungardt recently met with Horst, Terrill, and Karst, Architects Don Pruitt and Charley Sexton on Thursday, June 7 to finalize details on the proposed project. In May, the BOE approved proceeding with one of four options presented, a pre-engineered addition, which appeared to be the most affordable and workable.

Barb Wagner, Newest Jazzercise Instructor, to teach Low Impact classes to accommodate participants

Barb Wagner, a newly certified Jazzercise instructor, has begun offering classes at the Great Bend Jazzercise Center. Wagner earned the right to teach Jazzercise by completing an intense three-day workshop and performing a letter-perfect audition. Becoming a Jazzercise instructor requires dedication and thorough training. After submitting adequate references and putting in long hours of practice, Wagner recently participated in a rigorous workshop in Tulsa, Okla. sponsored by the Franchise Programs and Services Department of Jazzercise, Inc. Farm expo coming to town

The 2015 Great Bend Farm and Ranch Expo will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 8, 9, and 10, 2015 in Great Bend. The show is located at the Expo Complex west of town. The show hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on the 8th, 9 a.m.- 7 p.m. on the 9th and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the 10th with extended hours on Thursday.
