SKELLYTOWN, Texas - Diana Lynn Larkin, 55, died April 29 in Pampa, Texas. She was born Aug. 23, 1955, in Great Bend. She married Gary Larkin on Aug. 25, 1973, in Hoisington. In 1974, she graduated from Great Bend High School. She was the postmaster at Briscoe Post Office for the past 15 years and had been employed with the U.S. Postal Service for the past 25 years. She had been a resident of Skellytown, Texas, since 1979.
MESA, ARIZ. - Violetta Louise Karst, 81, died April 26, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness. She was a loving Wife, Mother, and Nana.
HOISINGTON - Mark Edward Smith, 57, died April 27 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born May 8, 1953, in Hoisington, he was the son of Charles and Ruby (Payne) Smith. He was a lifetime resident of Claflin.
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. - LaWanda M. (Batman) Farrell, 82, went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven on April 7, at Corondelet Hospice in Tucson, Ariz. Born Jan. 14, 1929, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Ralph E. Batman and Martha F (Batman) Williams. She worked 45 years in hospitals in Russell, Great Bend, and Sierra Vista Regional Hospital in Sierra Vista, Ariz. Her hobby was bowling.
Emerson MacDonald, 93, passed away peacefully at his home in Great Bend on April 28. He was born Sept. 3, 1917, at Hackettstown, N.J., the son of Emerson C. and Grace (Petty) MacDonald. He married Gladys Naoma Glass on May 29, 1941, at Winfield. She passed away Oct. 20, 2006. He was an English teacher at Great Bend High School for 47 years. He was a Great Bend resident since 1947, coming from Burlington.
LAWRENCE - Joseph R. McLaughlin, 88, Lawrence, died April 30, 2011, at Brandon Wood at Alvamar in Lawrence.
WICHITA - Dr. Thomas D. Van Winkle, 88, died April 28 at Life Care Center, Wichita. He was born Jan. 18, 1923, at Great Bend, the son of Albert and M. Ruth (McGinty) Van Winkle. He married Ann Wesley on Aug. 20, 1967, at Wichita. A Wichita resident most of his life, coming from Seward, he was a dedicated chiropractor for 39 years.

Historic program will be featured Saturday
Surrendered Family Ministries invites everyone to take part in observing the 60th annual National Day of Prayer at 7 p.m. on Thursday, at the Crest Theatre, 1905 Lakin, in Great Bend. Each year millions of believers across America join together to gather, worship, and pray on the National Day of Prayer. It is a significant occasion on which Americans lay aside cultural, racial, and denominational differences and join hearts in acknowledging God.

Great Bend Police are investigating a robbery reported Saturday morning at 2002 Holland St. At 10:39 a.m. they were dispatched to that address, where the victim reported he came home and a man was in his house. He said the man hit him in the face and took his wallet and $300 cash, then left on foot.
Shortly before the end of the school day Monday, an incident occurred at Great Bend High School. Although a student had a BB gun in his backpack, it was not pointed at anyone and school dismissed as usual, according to Lt. Bill Browne at the Great Bend Police Department.
ST. JOHN - Leonard Rex Davis, 84, died Feb. 23 at Leisure Homestead, St. John. He was born Mar. 2, 1929, at Manter, the son of Earl R. and Rosa M. (Kidwell) Davis. He was a farmer/stockman and life-long resident of rural St. John.

Christy Smith, 49, died Feb. 22 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Born May 22, 1964 at Travis U.S. Air Force Base Hospital in Fairfield, Calif., she was the daughter of Wendell H. and Mary (Brocher) Smith. A Great Bend resident since 1971, Christy was employed as a residential home care provider for Rosewood Services. She enjoyed animals, movies, reading, and sharing her wonderful wit and sense of humor. She particularly enjoyed helping others, always identifying with those in need.
Maxine R. Heueisen, 80, died Feb. 23 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 23, 1933 in Stafford County, she was the daughter of Earl and Jesse (Ballinger) Carr. On Nov. 26, 1955, she married Charles Heueisen in Larned. He died on April 17, 1979. A resident of Great Bend since 1997, coming from Larned. She was employed in the admissions department at Larned State Hospital, previously employed as the activities director at the Great Bend Manor and served as a case worker for the Center For Counselling. She had also previously operated the Meals on Wheels program ...
MUNJOR - Mary Ann Gross, 74, died Feb. 22, at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. Born Aug. 21, 1939, in Hays, she was the daughter of Ignatius and Irene (Werth) Koerner. On April 18, 1959, she married Wilbert Gross in Hays. She was a former licensed hairdresser and spent many years as a homemaker. She loved family gatherings with her children and grandchildren and the special trips she took with the love of her life, Wilbert.
Ellen Nadine Bittner, 81, died Feb. 23, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements are pending with Morell Funeral Home in Larned.
