Great Bend man dies after head-on collision in North Dakota

BELFIELD, N.D. - A 22-year-old Great Bend man died Friday, as the result of a motor vehicle accident north of Belfield, N.D. Three other people were injured, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Sister Marietta Urban 1928 - 2012

Sister Marietta Urban, 83, died March 1 in the Dominican Sisters' Convent Infirmary in Great Bend. Born Oct. 20, 1928, in Loretto as Viola Margaret Urban, Sister Marietta was the daughter of the late Jacob and Catherine Suppes Urban. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community in Great Bend on Aug. 31, 1942, and pronounced her first vows on Aug. 13, 1946. She celebrated 65 years of religious profession in 2011.

ELLINWOOD - Clara Lee Schlochtermeier, 75, died March 1 at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born July 29, 1936 in Ellinwood, she was the daughter of Pete Schlochtermeier and Susanna Caroline Debes Schlochtermeier. She was a graduate of Ellinwood High School. A long-time resident of Ellinwood, formerly of Larned and Kinsley, she was a Nurses Aide at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend.

HAYS - Bernice Rupp, 83, died Feb. 29 at St. Francis South Campus Hospital on Indianapolis, Ind. Born April 20, 1928, in Emmeram, she was the daughter of August V. and Marie (Always) Weigel. On Nov. 9, 1948 she married Linus J. Rupp in Emmeram and later separated. She was a graduate of Victoria High School. Connie Schneweis, 64, died March 2 at her Great Bend residence. She was born Aug. 17, 1947, at Great Bend, to Albert Anton and Sarah Josephine (Smith) Maes. She married Larry L. Schneweis June 14, 1969, at Holy Name Catholic Church, Bushton. He survives. Mrs. Schneweis was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1969, coming from rural Bushton.

Li'l Abner star balances theater, school and National Guard

At 6'6" and 240 pounds, 18 year old Barton Community College freshman Tyler Wassenberg has become used to being a focal point. Whether it's his turn to be platoon leader in the national guard or gracing the silver stage, the Abilene native knows what it's like to have all eyes on him. Carpenter's grandson recalls history of chapel woodwork

The woodwork for the chapel in Central Kansas Medical Center, now St. Rose Health Center, was crafted by Herman Dreiling from Hays. Herman, born in Victoria in 1896, was the father of Noreen (Dreiling) Duncan. Noreen and her husband James Duncan were residents of Great Bend from 1951 to 2013. They moved to Lenexa in 2013 to be closer to their children who all live in the Johnson County area. All four children (John, Tim, Mike, and Ann) graduated from Great Bend High School.

Both the Great Bend boys and girls bowling teams started off their 2015 WAC seasons with home wins against the visiting Dodge City Red Demons.
