The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the American Legion, 1011 Kansas Ave., in Great Bend. At 4 a.m. Thursday, a passerby saw a newer-looking pickup on fire in a field north of Broadway Ave. The pickup was blazing and its horn was sounding as the person called 911. No one else was around. Firefighters responded to 6000 block of 16th St., and found the truck in flames. Damage was estimated at $20,000 and the cause was undetermined.
Linh Reiter of Great Bend won the first-place jackpot of $750 at the recent Sunflower Diversified Services poker tournament. Robert Unger of Hudson won $300 for second place and Bill Sutton of Dodge City $150 for third.
CHASE - Darlene Weatherman, 60, died Sept. 21 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. Born Dec. 9, 1950, in Hoisington, she was the daughter of Ira P. and Margaret Heinz McKay. She was a graduate of Great Bend High School. On May 25, 1968, she married Larry Weatherman Sr. in Great Bend. A resident of Chase since 1992, formerly of Hoisington, she was a former office manager for Karlin Communications and Cablevision and a pastor.
David Ray Hickey, 59, died Sept. 8 in Denver, Colo. Born Dec. 2, 1951, he was the son of Raymond and Twilli Hickey.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Nebraska, South Dakota, The Kansas Plains and Southwest Iowa warns that if you're looking for extra income, it can be tempting to consider ads that recruit "mystery shoppers." Legitimate businesses, nationwide, do use mystery shopping – also known as secret shopping, performance evaluations, service monitoring and quality auditing -- as a means to monitor service quality. Market research firms, training companies, merchandisers, temporary agencies and other businesses specialize in recruiting mystery shoppers. Unfortunately, so do scam artists. Their advertisements claim: "You get PAID for shopping at big name, recognized companies because we need Professional Business Evaluators!"

Many people would balk at the prospect of a half dozen teenaged boys roaming about under their roof. Just the logistical challenge of feeding them would test the resolve of most. Others, however, relish the challenge – like Berge and Sharon Cox, retired corrections officers uniquely suited for managing a household full of adolescent boys.
Men might be from Mars and women from Venus, but at least we're in the same solar system. When it comes to politics, liberals and conservatives can't agree on what the problems are much less solutions. We can blame the politicians for not making progress on the big issues of our time, but until Americans share a common truth about what those issues are we won't move an inch.

So what can be realistically be done to deal with pesticide resistance once it happens? When pests develop resistance to pesticides, it is a difficult challenge but in most cases not an impossible one. The key to the effectiveness of these management practices include cost, time, markets and climate. Also remember we are speaking about resistance developing in insects and diseases, not just weeds.
