Drum Circle meeting moves to The Center

The Drum Circle, facilitated by John Makings, will hold its second meeting from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at The Center, 5815 Broadway Ave., Great Bend. This is a new location for the group. Meetings are on the third Thursday of each month and admission is free. For more information call The Center, 620-792-2544.

Elsie Mae Pickerill 1942 - 2012

Elsie Mae Pickerill, 69, passed away at the Minneola Long Term Care Center in Minneola on Monday afternoon, Feb. 13. Elsie was born on Sept. 12, 1942, in Ellsworth to John and Mildred (Mills) Ploutz. She graduated from Ellsworth High School. On Sept. 5, 1964, she was united in marriage to Gary Pickerill in Great Bend, where the couple made their home. One of Elsie's favorite activities was watching KU basketball.

Irene M. Beran 1923 - 2012

ODIN - Irene M. Beran, 88, died Feb. 13 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. Born April 11, 1923, in Victoria, she was the daughter of Wendelin and Pauline (Dreiling) Dinkel. On June 16, 1948, she married August V. Beran in Victoria. He died May 4, 1966. A resident of Odin since 1948, coming from Victoria, and moving to Great Bend in 2005, she was a homemaker and served in domestic services.

Juvenile Justice commissioner to visit BCC

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will meet with juvenile justice officials at the next BCC board meeting, set for 4 p.m. Thursday in room F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. Meeting with the trustees will be Kyle Rohr, Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility superintendent; Casey Cloninger, principal of Westside School in Larned; and Curtis Whitten – Juvenile Justice Authority commissioner, Topeka.

Habitat for Humanity seeks weekend volunteers

Habitat for Humanity of Barton County has resumed construction on its latest building project at 1906 Hubbard. Volunteers are needed every Saturday until the project is finished, said Rachel Mawhirter.

Thelma M. Steincamp (Langrehr) 1931 - 2012

WICHITA - Thelma M. Steincamp (Langrehr), 81, died Feb. 12 after a long, courageous battle with old age. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother (Ma), sister, aunt, and friend to all. Thelma had a special gift for friendships, a genuine interest in other people and made new friends everywhere she went. She showed a generosity and fortitude that did not waiver, even as her health failed.

Rodney D. Gisick 1944 - 2011

BISON - Rodney D. Gisick, 67, died unexpectedly on Dec. 25, 2011. He was born the son of Clarence and Naomi (Reichel) Gisick, on April 28, 1944, in Bison. He was a 1962 graduate of Bison High School, and went on to study music at Bethany College in Lindsborg and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass., where he earned a master's degree in voice performance in 1968. He was an active vocal performer and voice teacher for many years in New England, New York City and elsewhere, teaching at the University of Massachusetts and Amherst College.

Claflin ICC CYO to host 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

The Claflin ICC parish CYO is hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament beginning at 10 a.m on Feb. 25 at Central Plains High School in Claflin. The entry fee is $40 per team. There will be an 18 and over and a 17 and younger division. Both divisions will consist of a separate male and female bracket. Concessions will be available. Admission to watch is $1. CPMS “Survivors”

Twenty-six Central Plains Middle School 6-8 grade students earned the title of "Survivor" by surviving the past 50 days of school. To qualify for the 50-Day Survivor Safari reward, students had to have perfect attendance from Nov. 14-Feb. 7 for a total of 50 school days. Students who met this criteria were able to enjoy an afternoon of games and snacks on Feb. 8th. Students were challenged with an obstacle course, played limbo, tug-of-war, and a variety of other games planned by the Renaissance Council. K of C fish fry

An "All You Can Eat" Fish Fry will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 at the Hoisington Knights of Columbus hall. The menu will be pollock fish, cole slaw, scalloped potatoes and drinks. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 4 to 11, 4 and under free. All proceeds support area charities.

It has been a rugged five days for the Barton Community College women's basketball team. About as tough a 5-day stretch as any team in the nation will see this season. It came to a conclusion Wednesday night with a loss Hutchinson, 73-45 at the Barton Gym.

Lessons from Paris

After the tragic shooting at a provocative magazine in Paris last week, I pointed out that given the foreign policy positions of France we must consider blowback as a factor. Those who do not understand blowback made the ridiculous claim that I was excusing the attack or even blaming the victims. Not at all, as I abhor the initiation of force.
