LYONS - Joseph L. Cedeno, 83, died Oct. 13, 2011 at Rice County District Hospital.
GARDEN CITY - Verna Collins, 53, of Garden City, died Oct. 13, 2011 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
MCPHERSON - Dorothy Kirmer, 95, died Oct. 14, 2011 at The Cedars in McPherson.
The following Great Bend Middle School band members were selected by taped audition for the Southwest Kansas Music Educators Association Middle School Honor Band. Sarah Mauler - flute, Eric Vazquez - bass clarinet, Blake Stanley - trumpet, Ben Diel - trumpet, Andrew Curtright - baritone and Alex Lind - percussion. The Honor Band will be directed by Dodge City Community College band director Ginger Zingara. The concert will take place at the Dodge City Middle School on Nov. 5. The GBMS band members are students of Kurtis Koch who is assisted by Mark DeWald of Great Bend High School.

The director of the National Park Service's Monument Research and Preservation Program will inspect the Civil War soldier statue in Barton County's courthouse square when he visits Great Bend on Monday, Oct. 24. Dr. Dennis Montagna will also speak that evening to the Barton County Historical Society, in a program that will be open to the public.

The rain couldn't have fallen any more perfectly and seasonable temperatures should get most wheat off to a good start. Unfortunately the forecast is slim on the chance of rain so temperatures need to stay cool and it would help if winds weren't too strong. But at least we stand a chance now.

Barton Community College students will take a fall break from classes Thursday and Friday, Oct. 20-21. Faculty members will have a work day on Thursday, and will take Friday as their fall break. All college offices will remain open.
A steady rain and an unexpected change of venue didn't stop the seventh-annual Rosewood Rodeo. Thirty two clients from Rosewood Services Inc. competed Saturday, Oct. 8, in front of their friends and families at the Rosewood Ranch, located a few miles east of Pawnee Rock.
