Barton County farmer wins $2,500 for St. Joseph Catholic School through America’s Farmers Grow Com

Scott Klepper of Ellinwood has been selected as a winner in America's Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM, which gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations. The donations are available through the Monsanto Fund. Klepper has designated St. Joseph Catholic School, located in Ellinwood, to receive the award in Barton County.

Preceptor Pi donation

Members of Preceptor Pi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi present a gift of $550 to Dr. Kyle Krebaum for the Makinna Ann Hope Foundation established by Krebaum and his wife, Tasha, in memory of their daughter, Makinna, to help families who have special-needs children. This donation will go toward the Foundation's new project to fund playground equipment for a special-needs access park. Since the chapter's first donation to the Makinna Ann Hope Foundation in 2008, Preceptor Pi has given a total of $3,082 to the foundation. Singers preparing to deliver Valentine’s gifts

The Great Bend High School Madrigal Pops Singers will deliver singing Valentines from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 14 for a $25 donation. The recipient will be serenaded with a love song. The recipient will also receive a decorated cookie.

GBMS Jazz Ensemble participates in 2012 Winter Jazz Clinic

On Jan. 27 the Great Bend Middle School Jazz Ensemble participated in the annual Hutchinson Community College 2012 Winter Jazz Clinic. Guest artists from Denver, Colo. and Louisville, Kent. were in attendance as jazz clinicians for the high school and middle school jazz ensembles. Three GBMS Jazz Ensemble members received awards For Outstanding Musicianship. They are: Tanya Sanchez-Alto Sax, Blake Stanley-Trumpet and Thomas Bobbitt-Alto Sax.

Cartoonists and Red Lines

Like blaming a rape victim for her "provocative dress," many press pundits blame the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists (and the Danish cartoonists before them) for crossing "red lines," and inviting trouble. In the past few days the small community of American editorial cartoonists have been getting calls from their local media, asking for comments about self-censorship and what subjects we should be forbidden to draw in a free society.

Usually over the period of 12 months, you get an equal balance of good days and bad. On the playground of the cosmos, the scales tend to balance out.
