Jerry Buxton, the Great Bend Tribune's reporter covering Pawnee County, died Saturday at the Hospice House in Hutchinson after a brief, but valiant, battle with cancer. He was a valuable member of the Tribune team and a long-time friend. Below are some remembrances written by his co-workers at the paper. His obituary appears on page 3 of today's Tribune.
Due to the weather, the Black History Club program, Early African American Settlers, of Edwards, Hodgeman and Pawnee Counties presented by Mrs. Jane Doris has been rescheduled to Feb. 26th at 2:00 p.m. at the Escue Church in Larned.

But in order to compete in that regional qualifier for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, student must first win county championships. Barton County students will get that chance this Saturday, said Paul Snapp, with the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis.
ELLINWOOD - June Schiewe, 80, died Feb. 6 at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born June 16, 1930, in Sylvia, she was the daughter of Harry Merwin Shultz and Electa Lee Strawn Shultz. She attended Nickerson schools. An Ellinwood resident since 1963, formerly of San Diego, Calif., and Nickerson, she was a sales clerk at Litwin's and Brown's in Great Bend and the manager of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. On Sept. 12, 1977, she married Harold E. Schiewe in Ellinwood. He died on Dec. 9, 2008.

Kellie and Kathie Henderson, sexual abuse victims and twins from Wichita, will appear on the Oprah Winfrey show at 4 p.m. Tuesday on KWCH-TV, channel 12. The twins traveled to Chicago last week for taping, and the entire show is dedicated to their story.
