Area high school students presented their artwork in a juried exhibit in the Shafer Gallery on Thursday, April 26, with the top three award winners receiving scholarships from the Barton Foundation during Central Kansas Prairie League Art Day at Barton Community College.

Two pediatric endocrinologists, one of whom is from Great Bend, have opened an outreach clinic at St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgery Center. Both specialize in pediatric endocrinology and diabetes at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
Barton Community College's Community Student Organization donated almost $100 cash and various donations they collected on campus including food, blankets, litter and other animal care essentials to the Golden Belt Humane Society. Co-sponsor Shanna Legleiter said the group decided to host this "mini-drive" because several members of the group are animal lovers. "I think animals really just pull on our heart strings," she said. Trina Delgado, principal at St. Mary and St. Dominic schools in Garden City, has been appointed Superintendent of Schools for the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City by Bishop John B. Brungardt effective July 1. She succeeds Randy Steinle, who served as the interim Superintendent.
There was a photograph with a paragraph attached to it this past week in the paper about a hay fire in the area. The information indicated the cause of the fire appeared to be spontaneous combustion. Several students in the college's agriculture program were curious exactly what the term spontaneous combustion meant and what caused it to happen. Rayna Karst, an Emporia State University English major from Rush Center has been named to the dean's list for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Nearly 500 students were named to dean's lists for the spring 2015 semester.
Hutchinson Community College has announced the honor rolls for the Spring 2015 semester, including grades through the end of the interterm session. 1,330 students have been honored with selection to the two honor roll listings, with 721 achieving the President's Honor Roll with a 4.0 grade point average for the semester.
Taylor Ann Latham of Great Bend has accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars for her commitment to the ideals of scholarship, leadership, and service. NSCS is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing. The Great Bend Chiefs split a Friday night doubleheader with Hutchinson at the Great Bend Sports Complex. Great Bend fell in the opening game of the series by a score of 9-8. The Chiefs regrouped and delivered a 13-3 routing of the visitors in game two for the 1-1 split. Friday's second game was called in the fourth by virtue of the mercy rule.
