HOISINGTON -The Hoisington High School forensics team began its season at South Barber (Kiowa), where Ashley Lockwood placed first in prose and qualified for the state championship in Wichita in May. In extemporaneous speaking, Rebecca Shinofield placed third (just missing qualifying for state by one place) and Xavier Beran placed seventh.

LARNED - The Fort Larned USD 495 school board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the district offices. A Westside School contract, a social media policy and a fire alarm bid will be considered.
LARNED - The Fort Larned USD 495 school board voted to form a committee to begin the process of proposing a school bond issue to the community, according to minutes from a recent board meeting.
USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Office, 201 S. Patton Road in Great Bend. Items on the agenda include recognition of USD 428 volunteers; 2012-2013 Boardsmanship Academy Awards; approval of capital outlay resolution; KASB policy revisions; approval to request e-rate funding; approval to continue pursuing details of the Kansas Reading Roadmap Grant; review of Student Outcomes; Riley Elementary School HVAC and GBMS gymnasium updates; 2014-2015 school calendar review; approval of Zinn Memorial contributions; and approval of GBHS Student Council, KAYS and Dance Line Pink Out Night.
A study by The American Journal of Sports Medicine calculates that nearly 10 percent of Olympic athletes will compete with an injury sustained during competition or in training leading up to the Olympic Games. Sports with the highest rate of serious injury include bobsled, ice hockey and alpine freestyle skiing. Most frequent injury sites include head, spine and knees, with the most common types of injuries being bruising, ligament tears and muscular sprains.

High school students interested in law enforcement will once again have the opportunity this summer to see what law enforcement training and careers are like through the Cadet Law Enforcement Academy. The Cadet Law Enforcement Academy program is hosted by the Patrol, and sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. Cadet Law this year will be held from June 8-June 13.

This coming Tuesday evening, the advisory board for the Agriculture Program at Barton Community College meets with college personnel. Board members come from the agribusiness community, area farmers, representatives from K-State and FHSU, high school agriculture educators and administrators.
