As part of the annual National Wildlife Refuge Week Celebration, Quivira National Wildlife Refuge is holding a Bioblitz Friday evening, Oct. 14, through Saturday, Oct. 15. The Bioblitz is a scientific effort to find as many species of plants and animals as possible at Quivira over a 24-hour period. The event begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and ends at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Stanion Wholesale Electric Company just completed it's ninth Stanion Charity Golf Classic for the benefit of Special Olympics Kansas. This year's event was held at Falcon Lakes Golf Club in Basehor. The tournament raised $81,260 this year, which brings the nine year total to $695,000 since it's inception. Otto Buche, executive vice-president of Stanion is tournament chairman.
Owners of the top animals received auction premiums at the 79th Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS), while other exhibitors were presented scholarships. The event, held Sept.23-26 in Wichita, featured 656 youth from 89 counties showing 1,234 head of livestock.
