Cavanaugh honored in Classic Women Awards

While Traditional Home Magazine didn't name Jean Cavavanugh one of its five top award winners in its seventh-annual Best in American Caring and Giving Contest, judges did think highly enough of her to single out her volunteerism to USD 428 students.

Roger Alan Caldwell 1943 - 2012

LARNED - Roger Alan Caldwell, 69, died Jan. 29 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. Born Jan. 12, 1943, in Tulsa, Okla., he was the son of Franklin Eugene and Lucille Hicks Caldwell. On Feb. 16, 1990, he married Charlotte Boris in Tallahassee, Fla. She died Jan. 12, 2008. He was an account executive for Fox 49, in Tallahassee, Fla.

Leonard C. Oborny 1937 - 2012

RUSH CENTER - Leonard C. Oborny, 74, died Jan. 29 at his home in Rush Center. Born Dec. 29, 1937, in La Crosse, he was the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Kladik) Oborny. In 1955 he graduated from La Crosse Rural High School. On Jan. 6, 1959, he married Alice R. Nordman at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Olmitz. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was a service tire repairman for Farmer's Co-op in Rush Center.

HUTCHINSON - Richard Alan "Rick" Michael, loving husband, father, "Papa," brother and friend, went to be with his divine savior on Jan. 28 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born April 14, 1952, in Lyons, he was 59. On Sept. 14, 1979, he married Tonya Jean Rojas in Hutchinson. He spent many years as an oilfield driller throughout the Midwest. In 1991 he graduated from Hutchinson Community College and in 1993 he received his L.B.S.W. as a Phi Theta Kappa graduate of Bethel College. HOISINGTON - Henry E. "Ed" Eichman died Jan. 30, 2012 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington in care of the funeral home.

Tail Feather Contest ends Friday

This Friday is the last day for pheasant hunters to submit entries in the Great Bend Recreation Commission's annual Longest Tail Feather Contest, Program Coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick said. The winner will receive a $30 Chamber Gift certificate donated by Goss Insurance Agency.

Big event

Barton Community College cheerleader Morgan Lawery, left, helps Kristin May, 8, during arts and crafts time, Monday at the BCC Big Event. The Barton County chapter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters came to campus so "Littles" could spend some quality time with a host of Barton "Bigs." The event was sponsored by two Barton student organizations – Community Student Organization and Phi Theta Kappa. Other activities included soccer, baseball, basketball and bingo.

Library showing free movies

Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St., will be showing free movies served with free popcorn this month, starting with an after-school movie at 3:30 p.m. this Friday. Open to all ages, the after-school movie is an animated blockbuster featuring race car Lightning McQueen and friends competing in the first-ever World Grand Prix.

Delores June Clawson 1927 - 2012

LARNED - Delores June Clawson, 84, died Jan. 29 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. She was born June 28, 1927, at Great Bend, the daughter of Joseph and Katie Rowe Koelsch. She married Virgil M. Clawson on March 24, 1955, at Newkirk, Okla. He died on Aug. 11, 2007. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a homemaker and had worked at the Old Blue Goose and Harvest Inn restaurants.

Charlie's Inside Corner: I'm worried

I'm worried about my country. I'm worried about a country that cares more about how much air was in a football than they do about the leader of the U.S. Senate lying about Mitt Romney on the Senate floor. Harry Reid said he had "inside information" that Mr. Romney had not been paying his taxes. Turned out to be a lie but Reid only shrugged and offered, "Romney didn't win did he?"
