United Way Golf Tournament

The winning team of the Eagle Radio, Walnut Bowl United Way Mini Golf Tournament were presented with a check from Jim Mayberrry of Walnut Bowl. The team played for Wal-mart and over 30 teams played to help raise funds for United Way of Central Kansas and th 19 agencies it supports. JcPenney won for most teams represented and will receive a breakfast courtesy of Julie Smith director of United Way.

GBHS Debate Tournamet

On Saturday, Oct. 1st, the Great Bend Debate Team traveled to Lyons and Sterling. The Junior Varsity tournament was held in Sterling. Due to extenuating circumstances, Sylvia Ofoma, Paige Vanstenburgh, and Nathanial Cheney competed as a three man team. They ended the tournament with a 3-2 win-loss record placing 10th out of 30 teams. Mickie McNett and Michael Gieck finished with a 4-1 win-loss record and placed 3rd out of 30 teams.

HHS debater's medal

HOISINGTON - Hoisington High School debaters Montana Spires and Shannon Manka placed 8th and medaled recently at the Lyons Varsity Debate Tournament. They earned a 3-2 win record. Manka was debating for only the second time in her life.

Clara Barton Pink Glove dance video submitted to competition

HOISINGTON - The Pink Glove Dance is spreading … to Clara Barton Hospital and Clinic. More than 120 staff members at Clara Barton are starring in their own Pink Glove Dance video to help spread the word about breast cancer awareness and prevention. The video was submitted to a national competition to determine the best Pink Glove Dance video. The competition is sponsored by Medline Industries, Inc., manufacturer of the gloves and producer of the original Pink Glove Dance video.

Lottie Belle Jones Johnson 1920 - 2011

HOISINGTON - Lottie Belle (Miss Lottie) Mitchell Jones Johnson was born March 31, 1920, at Puckett, Miss., the daughter of George Mitchell and Margaret McGilorey Mitchell. She moved to Hoisington (South Town) with her mother and her brother Lonnie Mitchell in 1932. She married Orland Jones in 1937. They later divorced. She then married Henry Johnson in 1946.

Christine Beakey 1924 - 2011

Christine Beakey, 87, died Oct. 4 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born March 16, 1924, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Arthur Louis "Red" and Isabella (Schwager) Beakey. A Great Bend resident since 1932, coming from Chicago, she was a 1941 graduate of Great Bend High School. She was a welder during World War II, and a bookkeeper for Jule's Glass Company and the Barton County Treasurer's Office.

HOISINGTON - Bradley Livingston Kasper, 33, died at home in Hoisington on Oct. 3. He was born Sept. 8, 1978, at Hutchinson. He married Evelyn Barnett on Dec. 15, 2008, at Hoisington. He worked for D & S Casing and Murray Casing Crews. Mr. Kasper had been a Hoisington resident since he was 3 years old, coming from Hutchinson.

Carpenter's grandson recalls history of chapel woodwork

The woodwork for the chapel in Central Kansas Medical Center, now St. Rose Health Center, was crafted by Herman Dreiling from Hays. Herman, born in Victoria in 1896, was the father of Noreen (Dreiling) Duncan. Noreen and her husband James Duncan were residents of Great Bend from 1951 to 2013. They moved to Lenexa in 2013 to be closer to their children who all live in the Johnson County area. All four children (John, Tim, Mike, and Ann) graduated from Great Bend High School.

Great Bend High School bowling results

Both the Great Bend boys and girls bowling teams started off their 2015 WAC seasons with home wins against the visiting Dodge City Red Demons. The Panther boys dominated the entire match as they earned all 11 points possible in the contest. The Panthers were led by senior Jeff Meitler who had an exceptional day. The senior captain for the Panthers rolled games of 200 - 278 – 265 in route to a first place finish with a 743 series. Senior Matt Black captured 2nd place honors by rolling a 610 series.
