WICHITA - Marylyn Ann Scheuerman, 81, passed away on Jan. 21 in Wichita. Born Oct. 4, 1931 in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Harry and Rose Mausolf. In March 1950 she met and married Elmer Scheuerman. She was employed in medical insurance billing for various doctors in Wichita. She later became a volunteer with Victory In The Valley.

Things are heating up for the 14th annual Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice Chili Cook-off to raise money for local and area hospice patients. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16 at the American Legion, 1011 Kansas, Great Bend.

Students from Great Bend's Central Kansas Christian Academy brought home several awards from the annual Midwinter tournament in Jan. 18 Garden City. The tournament is hosted by High Plains Home Educators out of Garden City and many Christian schools and home school associations participate each year. It was hard to keep up with the quick-changing schedule for the Barton Community College baseball team as the weekend approached. Originally Barton was headed to Oklahoma for a twinbill Saturday and Sunday with Rose State College. But weather changed that. More than once.

But the Barton Community College softball team wasn't about to allow the weather to keep it from continuing its best start in several years. The Cougars rolled to a pair of easy wins at Brown Mackie College Friday afternoon.

Lyons Public Library and Rice County Historical Society will host a joint fundraiser celebrating sports and the way sports build and unite communities. This fundraising event will feature Chase High School graduate and retired NFL player Paul Coffman as guest speaker. Coffman played collegiate ball for Kansas State University before signing as an undrafted rookie free agent for the Green Bay Packers in 1978. His career for the Packers spanned from 1978-1985. He later played for the Kansas City Chiefs (1986-1987) and the Minnesota Vikings (1988) and was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 1994.
It almost happened again. The Barton Community College men's basketball team entered the NJCAA Top 25 for the second time this year Tuesday. The last time the Cougars did that they followed it up with a pair of losses.
